Ok, can you explain what symptoms you are experiencing at the time.

    Is the car missing?

Dose this vehicle start or, crank up?

Is there any smoke coming from the pipe?

This trouble code is related to a faulty camshaft sensor or to be more precise the camshaft position actuator circuit is open. There are 2 camshaft sensors on the Golf and the camshaft sensor that this code relates to is behind the timing belt. This code indicates that the solenoid that adjusts the cam timing has an issue - the circuit is open. The actuator itself may be faulty or if you are lucky it may be wiring related or be a bad connection to the actuator.

I should add this may cause the car to run poorly or feel underpowered, be difficult to start and cause the engine management light to come on on the dash.

P0171: I believe that fault is related to a lean fuel condition. In my opinion, the most likely cause of this is a faulty mass air flow sensor or a vacuum leak. In that situation I would have the car checked over - replace MAF if necessary (most likely this is the cause). I would then have the garage reset the ECU to clear all fault codes and see if P0023 (camshaft sensor fault) returns or not after driving the car for a while.

To have the camshaft sensor replaced will cost you around £400 in total. The actuator itself is around £265 and its behind the timing belt so costly in labour terms.

I would seek advice from the garage about changing the MAF first in my opinion as this may be the cause of the timing issue not the other way round. At the very least if you decide or they advise you to change the actuator first. I would strongly advise you to get the timing belt and tensioners done whilst they are at it and in this way save you that labour expense at a future service.

Reasoning is there will be no further labour charge for replacing the timing belt as they will have to dismantle that part of the engine anyway to get at the actuator.

MAF exchange unit from VW is about £70 - £80 and it's only 5 minutes to fit. Camshaft sensor is a different monster as outlined. Take advice from the garage on the best way to go as I don't want to put you wrong but I know the route I would go!

As stated if you are going the camshaft route as a first port of call then get the timing belt changed while they are at it. At least then you will save a future service cost.

Trouble Code: P0171

Fuel System Too Lean (Cylinder Bank 1)
Possible Causes:

Air leaks after the MAF sensor, or leaks in the PCV system Exhaust leaks before or near where the HO2S is mounted Fuel injector(s) restricted or not supplying enough fuel Fuel pump not supplying enough fuel during high fuel demand conditions Leaking EGR gasket, or leaking EGR valve diaphragm MAF sensor dirty (causes ECM to underestimate airflow) Vehicle running out of fuel or engine oil dip stick not seated

The cam code is linked to these issues, it is confusing the ECM.

P0023 B Camshaft Position - Actuator Circuit (Bank
    2).

the P0023 code is causing the P0171

Replacing the cam sensor will fix this issue.

If the original code given by the ecm was the P0023 and, the P0171 came last, i would recommend changing the cam sensors. this will fix the issue.

The Maf or, Air flow meter sensor in your case, will run you about 50 dollars and, the cam sensor will be 40 dollars.

I would replace the failed Cam sensor first. this will clear the P0171 code.

I have a 2006 vw golf 1.4. The exhaust fault light has come on and using a diagnostic machine i have found that fan relay no1 is faulty. Can anyone tell me where this is so i can replace it?

The fan has nothing to do with the fault for the exhaust. Please see a dealer on this, you need a VW approved live data scanner to check this out.

Emmissions light is on on my 1.6 vw golf its a 52 reg its got an mot on tuesday will it fail this can i turn light off myself thanks for any advise

cheapest way to find out is take it to a skoda dealer(labour rate less than vw)and ask for a diagnostic check, will cost but you will have all info to rectify any item before mot.(even if you take out the bulb the mot
checks the emmisions).the mot will not tell you, if it fails, what is wrong.....

Maybe you magnetic wheel sensors are contaminated or need replacing, that's what sends the data to the ECM. A faulty wiring could also cause sporadic occurrences when a problem acts up.

The parts aren't really that expensive, it's the labor these places charge an hour. Call around and see who can do it the cheapest, unless you want to do it your self.

If the check engine light is on look at the faults. It could be a defective cam sensor, the timing belt might not be in the place, or a defective mass air flow sensor.
