Question about Dryers

No air flow coming out of the back of the dryer

Our dryer shows AF when you turn the dryer on. I turn the dryer on and at first it shows the time, but just a few minutes of running the air flow light (AF) comes on. My husbansd took the vent off and there is no air coming out of the back of the dryer. What should we/he do?

The dryer is not drying as good as it should be and it will display the following letters AF

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Your AF error code is most likely an "Air-Flow error. Long drying times are ALWAYS cvaused by poor air-flow in a dryer.

Since you did not include a "Make and Model number" this reponse is generic.

The causes are many.
1. Go outside and check the thru the wall dryer duct flapper. Make sure it is free of lint.
2. Pull the lint filter and wash it with vinegar. The water then soap and water with a very good fresh water rinse.
3. Inspect the area where the lint filter is installed for any signs of lint build up. Use a crevice tool and a stretched out and folded in half wire coat hanger (Looped) to reach deep onto the lint build up areas so you can remove the lint with a crevice tool and Vacuum.
4. Remove the vent duct from the back of the dryer and check the air-flow. The air-flow should push a relaxed hand / wrist gently away from the dryer vent hole with the dryer on. If you do not get this kind of aor flow you will need to ensure all of the lint has been removed from the internal dryer ducting. If your sure the ducting is clear and you stil have poor air-flow then most likely the blower wheel has failed, Most of the time the center hub will crack and the blower wheel will not turn at full speed. Other times a fan blade breaks and blocks the ducting.
5. Use a flash light and look into the vent duct hole on the back of the dryer. Check for a restricted duct. Clean as necessary.
The above are the most common reasons for higher electric bills and long drying times.
Have a 2nd person look for lint after your done cleaning! The more eyes the better.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The dryer display for the time is displaying "AF".

"AF" means there is an air flow problem within the venting system. There is either a restriction in the hose, outside vent cover, the front vent, or maybe the lower blower assist isn't rotating.

Getting hot but not drying. AF is the code that shows up

AF means air flow. Pull the mach. out to access the rear and disconnect the hose, turn it on to dry and feel at the outlet for air flow, if you have good flow check the hose out to the vent for blockage. If you do not have good air flow, the fan is ban.

AF Code flashes briefly; Clothes don't dry - vent clear

Remove the back of the dryer and chek the lint filter area from the lint catching filter to the exhaust tube. There is a blockage in airflow even though you feel the air at the exhaust there still insn't enough air flow to allow the proper drying of the clothes. This symptom that you gave clothes being hot but not dry the only cause for this is improper air flow

I have a whirlpool ultra capacity dryer and a code keeps flashing when i;m drying it says AF

The AF indicates an insufficient air flow. You need to check the lint screen after every load, AND you need to perform routine cleaning of the dryer venting (inside the dryer, as well as the vent line from the dryer to where it exits the house) about every three months. If left in this condition, the dryer heating circuitry will eventually failed and/or you could cause a fire hazard. An easy way to check to see if you have a clog somewhere is to remove the dryer vent hose from the back of the dryer. Run the dryer to see if you have air flow coming from the back of the unit. The air should be about 140 degrees F and forceful. Check to see if the error comes back. If everything runs fine, then you know the problem exists in the vent line between the dryer and where it exits the house. If you still have problems, you will need to unplug the dryer, remove the back panel and inspect the interior for clogs. At least you have a dryer that warns you when the air flow become restricted or blocked. Most dryers will continue to run until they overheat or fail. I hope this information is helpful. Post back with your comments and let me know.

"AF" is a restricted air flow condition. You say you've only had your dryer for 3 months, but have you ever cleaned the ducting? You need to check the lint screen after every load, AND you need to perform routine cleaning of the dryer venting (inside the dryer, as well as the vent line from the dryer to where it exits the house) about every three months. If left in this condition, the dryer heating circuitry will eventually failed and/or you could cause a fire hazard.
