Question about Dell LATITUDE D400 D500 D505 D600 D800 INSPIRON 8500/ 8600/9100/ 00R116 CD-ROM Drive

Latitude d400 suddenly starts turning itself off

This is so frustrating. it usually happens when I am surfing on the net. sometimes I can't get the computer to turn on when I hit the power button. other times it will respond to the power button and then turns itself off after I sign in, or after it re-boots, or when it comes to the screensaver page. and it gets worse each time I try to power up again. I saw online that it might be a fan or a bad motherboard, neither of which do I know how to fix. I'm unemployed so doing it as cheaply as possible is important. Thanks!

I got to event viewer, but I don't see red x's. It pops up with application, internet explorer, security and system in the right-hand column.

I got to event viewer, but I don't see red x's. It pops up with application, internet explorer, security and system in the right-hand column. I am sorry I left out a step, now that you are there, go into application and system and see what the red x's are in there.

Go to my computer and right click, go to manage and then to event viewer, you should see a bunch of red x's and I need to know what they say and what the event ID for that is and then I can help you further.

Could also be a virus, some viruses shut the computer down. Try downloading avg free edition from
Otherwise you have to take it apart to check the fan etc

I have a dell latitude d400 laptop. i just restored it back to favtory settings. now it wont go past the start up screen

You may have a problem with a driver that is stalling it out or your restore had a problem. If you can get into safe mode you can try to run down the hardware that is working and what isn't you can check with the bootlog.txt (root of c) to see what failed to load. It is actually the one prior to the first failed to load that will be the error.

I'd make sure the restore dvd is clean (soft lint free cloth with no harsh cleaners) as that might have messed up the read on a driver files. Then re do the restore.

This isn't hardware the is strictly a annoying software problem. Usually drivers and sometimes a corrupt disk.

Latitude d400 doesn't show wireless networks

Chcek if there's a wifi switch and if it's turned on. Try going to a wifi hotspot and see if your system can detect any wireless networks. If not, uninstall and reinstall your wireless drivers.

My Dell Latitude D400 intermittently drops its IP address. Sometimes this happens in the middle of reading a page, but more often, it happens when clicking on a link to a subsequent article. It is siting...

Renew your ip address. The computer will automatically regenerate another one so that the two pc don't conflict.

You can can reset your IP address by :
1. Opening the Windows Command Prompt located in Start -> Accessories or
Start -> Run -> Type in either "cmd" or "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
2. Type in "ipconfig /release" (without the quotes)
3. After releasing the IP, typie in "ipconfig /renew" (without the quotes)
If the instructions above doesn't work, you can set a manual IP address by :
1. Going to Network and Dial Up Connections in the Start -> Control Pannel
2. Going to your local area connection
3. Click "Properties"
4. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
5. Then again click "Properties"
6. Selecting the "Use the Following IP Address"

After being turned on the screen goes black and the lock key with the number 9 is illuminated ablove the keyboard

I had that happen to me with my Dell as well... If you're comfortable with taking a laptop apart.. you'll need to detach the screen ribbon, clean it with rubbing alcohol, and then reattach it. This should do the trick..
