Awful smell in drum of washing machine

My washing machine contains a sour water smell in the drum. I've checked the drain line and its correct. And I've even ran bleach through the gentle cycle without any clothes in it. The smell is getting into our clother and it is just awful. Please help!

Re: Awful smell in drum of washing machine

I had this problem with mine a few years back and a repair man told me to leave the lid to the washer open after each wash to allow it to dry in between washes - never had the problem again! KG

Re: Awful smell in drum of washing machine

DO NOT mix Clorox and vinegar together. You will end up with a cloud of toxic chlorine gas. Running Clorox, rinsing, then running vinegar might help, but definitely not at the same time. That will make for a very bad day !

Re: Awful smell in drum of washing machine

My friend told me of someone who researched this problem, and it is because we are using liquid detergent. Switch to a granular high efficiency detergent. Before you start using it, you must run through a mixture of about one cup Clorox and two cups vinegar through the washer, using the Sanitary setting. I am actually on-line now trying to research the exact proportions of Clorox and vinegar when I ran across your problem.

Why does my Whirlpool H2low washing machine smell bad inside?

Are you sure it's your washer or is there an awful sewage gas smell coming up your drain where your washer hose drains in.. I had this happen and I had to instal a U trap in the line the washer drained into.

I have a WD1 12C Smeg washing machine - when I open the door there is an awful smell reminiscent of stagnant water - the machine it self seems to be running OK I've put it on 90degress empty but still...

This will potentially sound odd, but run the 90 degree cycle again with 3 dishwasher tablets in the drum. The smell is bacterial and probably the result of a build up of residue from biological soap powder (Which is simply bacteria that eat your stains). Dishwasher tablets are anti-bacterial and will kill the bugs making the smell

The clothes even after sitting in the washer a short time seem to sometimes have a sour smell.

Double check your drain line, make sure its not clogged and also that the drain water isnt backing up back into your washing machine. If thats not the case then you may want to use some bleach or pirchase a product called affresh to sanitize your machine. Also you must leave the lide open after use to let the machine air out.

Clothes smell like body odor after washing. using tide ultra he2 detergent.

i had what sounds like a similar problem. i complained of our laundry smelling sour then finally like sour sewage and a flooded laundry room. i was told that when its not draining properly, it can create a siphon-effect and actually pull the dirty water back out of the drain lines-yuk! i hope this isnt true.
there was a baby sock stuck in the pump preventing it from draining properly. hope your problem can be remedied as easily.
as for the smelly clothes, i always add 1/2 cup white vinegar to each load. it does wonders for odors.

I hear water in the washer drum & smells. How do I get that water out?

Residual water in the drum is NORMAL. Since the drain pump and drain lines are at the lowest point of the drainage system, gravity will ALWAYS keep some water in the lines and pump. However, if you have water visibly present in the wash basket, then you may have a blockage in the drain system somewhere. Most often, the drain pump can become clogged with debris over time and need to cleaned out. The following link explains how:

Debris in the drain pump and/or drain lines can contribute to foul odors being present in the washer. In addition, NOT leaving the door open between washes can cause the tub to become stagnant. The manufacturer recommends leaving the door OPEN between washes to allow the tub to air out and to prevent mold and mildew from forming. The following link can give you some pointers on things to do to get rid of odors and prevent them from coming back:

If you have any questions about these procedures, please post back with your MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Awful smell! I drain it every cycle, I use the washer cleaner, everything! I am so sick of my towels smelling awful.

Sounds like the little flexible apron just in front of your washer drum has mildewed. Take a look and see if it is holding water, and look for mold while your'e at it. Use a good bathroom mold and mildew remover to kill the mess and deodorize it.

I have a Whirlpool Duet front loading washer with a smelly trap.

It is normal to have water in the drain lines and drain trap even when the unit is not in use. There's usually about a gallon of residual water in the lower portion of the wash tub, drain line and pump. If you are experiencing sour odors from the washer, the following link can give you some pointers on things to try to help keep the smell from coming back:

Read through the link provided and let me know if you still have problems. I personally own a front loader and have followed this regiment for 9 years now with no odor or mildew problems. I hope this helps you as well.

Machine makes awful noise during any movement, spins very slowly, not enough to spin out. Making an awful noise, like stripped gears and won't drain

There are three reasons for such awful noise during spinning. Either the drum or the bearing turning the drum. Check for drum bearing failure if your washing machine is noisy on the spin cycle. Drum bearing failure is common when the bearing seals start allowing water to enter. You can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand, and if the drum rumbles, replace the bearings.

Sour smell coming from inside whirlpool duet front loader

At the risk of being rude... it's not your washer that is causing the problem it's your washing habits. Jeff is "right on the money" when he stated water temperature is important. It's fine to use mainly cold water but it makes preventive maintenance very important. A hot soak or wash as your last cycle on was day will help dissolve and flush out residue. Just as important is the amount of detergent used and use of fabric softener. To remove odor from your washer and laundry the "splash area" just above the normal waterline must be cleaned. This is invariably the area of heaviest buildup of odor-causing residue. To clean the splash area add 1 or 2 caps of smelly washer cleaner to a full load of laundry and wash in a hot setting. The added bulk of the laundry will raise the water level to include the splash area. Intermittently pause to soak for more extreme cases.

Inside of Washer Smells

often in washing machines there is a drain trap which needs cleaning out from time to time, (usually accessible from the front behind a removable facia) The manual should tell you how to clean this. you need to drain the water first (as there is often a little water still in the system). if you look on the program dial there is often an item that has an arrow pointing down, this should be the drain program, after this is done you can remove the draining cover and clean the workings inside, hopefullt this will solve your problem :)
