Try using external speakers or headphones, if the problem persists, you might have a sound card problem.

If external speakers or hearphones work, you might need to replace your speakers

The sound on my dell latitude d600 laptop stop working completely after the speakers i had pluged in fell and broke. now i cant get sound from the laptop at all. could something be fried? how do i fix?

i would think it is more to do with the sound settings on the laptop rather than some thing been fried. You will have to go into the control pannel and go to the sould settings, have a play around with all the setting and i would be hopeful that you will be hearing things again soon.

Playback inactive

Let's start at the beginning. Shutdown the laptop. Wait about 30 seconds and then start it up again. Hold the Fn key down when you turn on the power. This will take you into diagnostic mode and the computer will run several tests. When it get to the video test you will see several colored bars. The computer will play a few musical notes to get you attention and ask if you see the color bars. Press 'y' to continue. If you hear the notes you will know that the sound hardware is working. Let it finish the tests and follow the promptsto restart the PC.

Once Windows has fully loaded, open the Control Panel and locate the Sounds icon. Open that and look at the system sounds at the bottom. Select any of the sounds. There is a button to the right with a right-pointing triangle. The triangle should turn black and you should be able to click it and hear the sound associated with the alert. If it doesn't turn black, you may need to do a maintenance installation of Windows and the update all of the security patches. I just had to do that on guy's computer last week. It took a good half day.

You can also check in the Device Manager to make sure that the Sound card is working properly. I would download the latest driver from the mfg.'s website and install that before doing the Windows re-install.

Another thought: Are you running SP3? It can cause problems. I have a D600 with SP3 and the sound is working properly.

Good luck, and please let me know how it works out for you, especially if you need more help. ~ Spoem

D600 Power problem, Won't boot up

I agree. Try to turn on your computer using the ac adapter only. If the system won't hold power using the ac adapter. I suggest to call you computer manufacturer to check the warranty . I am seeing a problem with the motherboard.

Keep me posted.
