Your Compaq computer includes a recovery partition that allows you to restore your operating system in the event you get a virus or your hard drive crashes. Use the Compaq Recovery Manager to restore the computer to the factory operating condition. Only use the recovery method as a final step in the troubleshooting process as all the software and personal files stored to the computer's hard drive will be erased.

Click the "Start" icon and type "recovery" into the "Start Search" field. Click the "Recovery Manager" option that appears in the list of results. Click "Advanced Options," and click the "System Recovery" option. Click "Next" and the computer will restart into the recovery mode. Click the "System Recovery" option and click "Next." Click "Next" in the "System Recovery" window to launch the recovery process. The partition will reformat your hard drive and restore your Windows Vista operating system to the original condition

Changing hard drive / do i have to reinstall os?

If the old hard drive is still working, then you could make an image of it and restore that image on the new hard drive removing the need to reinstall the Operating System.

There are several free programs available that can make the image:
Easeus Todo Backup
Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 Free Edition

If the old drive has failed and you do not have a full backup, then you will need to reinstall the operating system and all your programs and data that was on the old drive.

Added a new hard drive to my desktop compaq presario sr1620nx and trying to install my operating system and its says no operating system found or corrupt partition and when i hit r to recover its brings me...

You can't transfer the operating system. You have to reinstall it on the new hard drive. Most of the time the disks that come with a computer are just restore disks. Without the restore partition that comes on the hard drive that came with the computer, those disks are usually useless. Or if you want, you can keep both hard drives, and just setup the jumper settings on the hard drives so that the old hard drive is the primary, and the new one is the secondary. Then you will still have the operating system and you will use the new hard drive for storage.

It appears that the hard disk drive is not being seen in the Bios. Ensure that both the power and data cables are connected to the drive and the controller. try booting again.

I brought a used campaq IA-1 and cant delete old users and add me

there is only one way to restore this system, you will have to take the hard drive out and hook it up into another desktop and install windows 98/me or 2k to it and then put the drive back into the compaq more than likely you will have to download drivers for it as well

Clean the drive so it can be put back to orginal factory

Compaq / Hewlett Packard Support Website. Make sure you have correct Compaq model (ie: Presario 5000). You should have a partition on the hard drive markes "system restore" or the likes. If not, you should have the O.E.M. (CD-ROM) that came with the system that will also let you re-install the operating system. A word of caution, if you try and re-install the O/S without the orgional CD-ROMS you may not have all the correct hardware drivers.

Compaq restore cd

Hi mithz.
I'm not you people.
(Please keep track of the user who you ask a question too).

When you installed windows 2000, (If you formatted the entire drive during install), you might have taken out the small partition that holds data for a system restore. No version of windows likes
you going backwards. In order for you're system restore CD's to work you'll need to format the hard disk drive. Windows will not install if Windows 2000 is found on the drive. The fastest way to get Windows 2000 off the drive without deleting any other partitions Compaq installed would be to go to the hard disk drives manufacture's site & download their setup tools/utilities. You'll be able to creat a bootable floppy disk that will function in a dos-like mode out side of windows. You'll be able to format the Windows 2000 partition. Once that is done you will be able to incert the restore CD (s) & install Compaqs windows XP.
You may need to pull the drive in order to see who made the drive. EX; Seagate, Smsung, Maxtor ect. Here is the link for Seagate.
Every manufacture has similar bootable floppy software.
Read the instruction provided by the manufacture on how to create the floppy disk & how to run it.

Good Luck!

System Restore

All your files are now marked as not in use. What this means is they could be "undeleted" if some went about doing so. Over time they will get overwritten has the pc is used more and more. If you are worried about someone recovering your data then you need to do a wipe of your hard drive using a program like DBAN. Then you'd need a recovery cd handy to restore the pc, since after doing the wipe the hard drive will be completely erased... Hope that helps.

Cant perform a quick restore.

what size is yous hard drive and is the windows installing it'self properly and the other problem is have you got all the motherboard drivers if not then the system will become unstable and the hard drive will need to be format back to manufactures default as the files thet were on drive are burrired deep and the only way to get rid of problems is using a program called kill disk then using your win 98 start-up floppy and fdisk the hard drive then partition then format the hard drive then install windows on then all other files for motherboard and graphics and other devices. it should take you about 1 day to get back on line with pc up and running. hope this helps
