Hi Carlos, welcome to FixYa.
Yes you can use an SDHC card or an SD card. Either one is fine, but I would not go over a 4gb card because it might not work with your camera. (Nikon has only tested that camera with up to 4gb so they won't guarantee any more than that will work. You just have to try it and see.)
You can find the manual here.

Thanks for coming to FixYa.

SOURCE: Will my Coolpix 5600 use SDHC SanDisk cards?
Sorry to say, but . . . No!
Cnet Reviews shows the specifications on your camera.
It only goes so far as SD memory, which is limited to 2GB.
It's a hurdle technology manufacturers had to jump, and now consumers must jump also.
SOURCE: How about listing the cameras
The list of cameras that can use SDHC cards would be in the thousands....not very practical. Anyway, unfortunately your camera cannot use them.

SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.
Another possibility- SD type cards have a little switch on the card that can write protect or "lock" it. Take the card out of the camera and check this switch. To unlock it, it should be moved towards the edge of the card which has the electrical contacts.
Finally, it may be that the card is not formatted. Most come pre-formatted, but there is a format function in the camera that you can try. Formatting deletes anything already on the card.

I would try to insert it in your PC and then format the card. Then reinsert in your camera and
see if that helps.
