Question about Microsoft Windows 98 for PC

Windows 98se video drivers

I have an old computer with 98SE and some specialized software that won't run on newer op sys. I had to replace my HD and reinstall 98SE. Previously, somehow, I had generic drivers for higher resolutions than 640 x 480. Are there any generic drivers for higher resolutions?

Not for 98SE i believe. a great OS but MS most likey deleted those from their servers long ago. if you can find someone else who has a system with 98SE you may be able to copy and install them from them. someone who is really old and smart "CE" maybe could program them:) for you but, you should have backed up your system and drivers before this repair was needed

SOURCE: windows 98 SE

if you need an operating system and would not mind using linux (an alternative to windows) look on the site and see if you would like to try it. the download is about 80meg and it runs very fast on all the computers i have used it with. or try looking on softpedia for a free download of the outdated windows xp install disks. or you can buy some disks from ebay. but i reccomend trying puppy linux, it is free and you have nothing to lose.(the disk is a live boot disk, so it should just run off the cd)

SOURCE: Need a driver for USB2 external hard drive to work with Win98SE

1) the device should have come with install software, use that. if you dont have it try these ->

2) plug it in and go into the Device Manager,
Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager

it might be "unknown" but if it's in there click on it, click on "Install Driver". it will ask you to let it search the web for a driver. allow it to do so. it may or may not find one.

3) OR go to the manufacturers web site and look for the SUPPORT link. you should be able to make your way to the drivers section. they may have one for you.

If these dont work --
What is the make model etc of the device, all the numbers please.
and please gimmie your pc info. make model processor , os, etc

Let me know :)

Have an old Iomega Ditto tape drive Easy 800 and Ditto Tools software for Windows and Windows 95. Want to move data from old tapes onto Vista Op Sys and then onto a CD. Will this old software install on...

Is it possible to find an old computer running an old version of Windows, and then to connect the tape-drive to that computer, and then to copy the files onto a folder on that computer?

Then, if that computer has a network-card, you can "share" that folder, so that all computers on your network can then access that "shared" folder, i.e., to copy the files, and then to burn them to a CD-recordable.

Turn on computer and get promt no op sys try to load a new op sys like win 7 from my win 7 disk that I got and it say no harddrive

If you can get BIOS to open, then check to see if it is booting from a CDROM first. If you have an OS disk, put this in an try to boot. If it shows a hard drive, remove partition and then recreate and format it. This should fix it so that you can install Windows. One time I had to do it 2 or 3 time, but it finally worked. Then 2 weeks later the HD failed, as if it was trying to warn me all along. If you are using PATA drives make sure you have the jumpers set right for master and slave (I know it is old school, but you never know.)

Ctx ezbook 700e larger HD

Why move it at all. XP needs SP3 to read hi capacity drives. I use USB external drives without any problems to increase capacity without the hassles of moving files. There are software packages that will transfer data from one hard drive to another if you must.

Need to install

How old and what is the Op systen?

You usually can obtain a driver download for your peripherals, however, you shuld check to see if your computer can handle them. (Does it have enough power to run them?)

Here is the link to download a driver. Be sure to enter you Op Sys,if they have it, and to turn off all running programs while you are downloading. Be very careful to select the correct driver.

This particular printer looks a little complicated for a very old computer.

Wat to do if i cant remember my password to my computer

Remove the backup battery on the mother board and the plug it back in. Thats if its the bios password your're talking about. you may have to jump an eeprom if that does not work. If its the op sys password you can just remove the hard drive and put it in an external case and copy all you files you need and then just reinstall your op sys.

Need administrator level control over 'new' (ex-network) computer

Windows 98 does not have the same concept of "administrator level control' as later Windows versions, so it is more likely that this computer has some form of 'lockdown' software or configuration, especially if it was previously a school computer. There is a wide variety of ways to lockdown a computer, from policies in the registries to core modifications, so your best bet will be to locate a set of Windows 98SE disks, online or elsewhere, and reformat and install fresh. Without them, you will need considerable DOS and registry knowledge, or a friend or consultant with same.

If you want to try, start the computer in Safe Mode, and run msconfig.exe, and disable most executable stuff in system.ini, win.ini, config.sys, and autoexec.bat. Then run regedit.exe, and locate the policy keys, and remove them, an admittedly very simplistic summary of steps. But they may have deleted and replaced too much of the core, for this to have a chance of working. You really need someone with considerable DOS and Win98 experience, or just reinstall Win98.

Clicking sound wile drive running, sys wont complete ops while clicking, now what

Clicking sounds coming from a computer tend to be indicate a hardware problem with your hard drive. That sound is commonly referred to as the "click of death" and indicates that your hard drive may be failing. Contact your computer manufacturer to send your laptop in for repair.
