Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

2 Answers

I currently have a cable modem that the Linksys router has been working with for the last couple of years. Yesterday it started acting up by not letting me go to some sites. Today, it has failed completely. I can get to the internet as long as the Linksys router is not connected to the madem. As soon as I connect the Linksys router to the cable modem, I can not get online. It's almost as if the router is somehow disabling the modem. Can you help?

Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

There are two options, if you use static IP or dinamic. So you need to configure your router as it is. And try if the DHCP in your router is Enabled

Linksys router not recognize internet

Make sure your router's WAN port is set to dynamic IP. If the light on the front doesn't glow/blink for the WAN port, try a different cable. If a different cable doesn't work it's probably toast. :( This problem appears to be directly linked to the relationship between the WAN port and the modem. Given that the devices can connect to the router, but not internet, it has to be the WAN. Sometimes if the modem goes out it will send too much voltage through to the router and fry the WAN. Had that happen to my parents router. If the above doesn't "fix ya" then try a different router.

Worst case, you might have to put a wireless card in your PC and bridge the modem (wired connection) to the wireless card and broadcast for your wireless devices. At least until you get a new router.

I have a Linksys E1000 wireless router. It has been working fine. The power cord it is on was unplugged briefly last night. Now when I plug it back in, all the blue lights are flashing and I can't get...

have you tryed turning off computer, router, and modem if you have one. then unplug all connections from router (phone line, ethernet net cable and power cord). Then wait 2 min then plug all back in, and turn on modem, router, then computer. We lost power yesterday for 3 hrs and I needed to actually turn in all off and unplug power cords then turn it all back on to rest and reboot them to get them working properly. Hope it helps.

Can connect to internet directly through modem. When connected through Linksys WRT54GS router, all lights are ok on both modem and Linksys--including internet. (Have had this router for 2 years...no...

As last resort you might want to use a JTAG cable and debricking programming software. If your router is brikced or you want to change the firmware this cable can do it. The cable will connect to your parallel port and your wireless router so you can repair your router. They are about $5.95.

Linksys WRT150N router disappearing from PC

If you aren't able to access the router even using the hard wired connection, there seems to be a problem. Resetting won't work. You must hard reset the router. And here are the steps.

1. Push the reset button and hold it for a minute
2. While you are holding the reset button pull out the power cable every 10 second and put it back in right away. So in a minute you would be doing it 4-5 times

Try this a couple of times and if this still doesn't work, its time for getting your router replaced from linksys.

I cannot get my router to work

If you connect the computer directly to the cable modem, you are able to go online. that is a good sign.
Now it seems that the router and the modem are not communicating with each other. You will need to reconfigure the router or change the router settings so that both the devices will communicate.

Loss of internet connection to desktop with WRT 160 N

If you do this and post the results I can tell you how to configure the router as you do not need the domain:-

1. connect to modem with an ethernet cable, without the router
2. assuming it's windows, start --> control panel --> Network Connections --> double click on the Local Area Connection --> Click details and post ip address, subnet, default gateway and both dns servers

Well i had just bought a lynksys router from my friend with no software cd so right now i am trying to download the software online so when i switch my cox modem with the linksys modem i want the software...

You should be able to get any software that you need from LinkSys.com but I have a couple of quick questions first:

1. Is the LinkSys unit you just purchased a router or modem?

If the unit is a router, you are still going to need a Cox compatible modem. If the unit is a modem, you will still need a router to complete the network setup unless LinkSys makes a combination cable router/modem, and I haven't been able to research one.

2. If it is a modem, is it a cable modem and, if it is, is it Cox compatible?

According to the Cox Web Site, the only models of LinkSys modems that are currently compatible with the Cox High Speed Cable Internet Service are:

BEFCMU10 v3
BEFCMU10 v4
WCG200
WCG200 v2
CM100

In this particular case, you may need to contact LinkSys and/or your Internet Service Provider. In most cases, they will not only tell you exactly what type of equipment you need, they will also talk you through setting up the network once you have the equipment - usually at no charge.

Your router might need a restart to begin communicating with the modem again. Remove power from the router, wait a few seconds, then turn the power back on.

Reset the modem while the router is plugged into it. Do this by disconnecting the power to the modem and then reconnecting.

Wireless router needing ethernet connection?

Hi ABVT66 - Didn't your router come with two short cables? It should have. One is the cable that hooks up the modem to your router and the other is the cat5 (ethernet) cable that connects your router to your pc. Let me know if you have these cables. Also, if you check your device manager on your pc, click on the + next to network adapters and it will tell you your network adapter. DON'T RATE THIS 'TIL WE'RE DONE. Thanks.
