Freecom Hard Drive Classic 500GB

I connected up the external hard drive, everything is fine there but when i try to transfer music, films etc. it only allows 5GB approx. then the blue light at the front goes out and nothing else will transfer. can you help me figure out how i can get my use of the 500GB avaiable.
