Try format the harddrive, when it boots up press f2 then in the bios go to where the option is for boot sequence and change to cd rom as first device and reboot with the windows disc(or whatever operating system) and it will load and ask to install but remember to do a full format when you get to this option remembering that you lose all on your harddrive.Alternatively try starting in safe mode after rebooting press f8 i think and work from there and possibly you can undo whatever caused your problem or run windows live onecare free of charge from microsoft to defrag and repair registry errors etc,use weekly or whatever makes you happy.

    Hello

When you start your pc with the windows xp disc in the cd rom it will ask to boot from the disc and you click enter/yes or whatever is on screen.Make sure you have selected your cd/dvd rom as first boot device in the bios(press f2 when your pc starts and look for the boot menu among the items on display and follow the instructions on the right of the screen as regards making changes) .During the install of windows xp or whatever system you have there will be a warning that another operating system was detected and you need to remove this before continuing, some time after this a option will be for a clean install with the option to format the harddrive and take that then follow the rest of the install prompts to load windows further. If you google "how to installing win xp " in a google search the first site will be microsoft who explain everything in detail on the 3 ways to install windows, including using a floppy boot disc(available from boot disc.com free) but this is tricky for anybody not sure of wht needs doing. If you cannot find the page from microsoft post a email address from a free account like hotmail or google etc( to avoid junkmail etc). Before you format your drive download panda cloud antivirus free and zonealarm free firewall as well as service pack 3 from microsoft as well as any drivers from your manufacturer to make reinstallation much easier. If you dont have cd or dvd burning software go to N.C.H/download.com or cnet.com or pcworld.com who have lots of freeware applications that are 100% safe and free.I know its frustrating not knowing these things but i found all this out the hard way after numerous pc shops ripped me off after viruses and harddrive failures so dont give up.

    Regards

    Clint

If you have tried to restore from the restore disks, do you know if it formatted the hard drive yet or not?

Once the format begins and you find that there is an error on the discs (can't read or whatever) then the next step is to either do a clean format or order a new set of discs from the mfg and restore from those.

They are not terribly expensive, but you will have all the drivers already on the restore as opposed to a clean install.

Good luck

God Bless

First of all, take the MBput and clean the dust off of the MB. Make sure the PCI slots are clean. Take out the memory stick and clean them with a pencil eraser. Get into the BIOS and check the date and time, if the date and time is wrong, that won't let you boot up. If every time you boot, the time is incorrect, then you need to change the internal battery, this is the one that is plug to the MB.

I'm guessing the different monitors are different sizes? The only thing a driver for a monitor will do will tell the computer the max resolution that the monitor will be able to go up to. However most 90% of monitors can use the built in windows driver without issues. Your best bet is going to be to change the resolution on the monitor. To do this you can either hook up the old monitor, lower the resolution, and then plug in the other monitor. Or you can boot the computer into VGA low resolution mode by pressing F8 as the computer starts up and selecting that option. From there you can lower the resolution, and then put it at something more desirable with the new monitor.
The other possibility being your Gateway monitor is actually malfunctioning and you just happened to hook up a bad monitor.

If your laptop shows bios or logo screen then try taping F8 key while it's booting up, this will bring you to a boot screen boot in safe mode and restore system to before the crash.

check the BIOS version, if there is an update for it on the gateway site apply it. a checksum error in CMOS BIOS cannot be overcome and you will always have to deal with this issue if no bios updates are available. There is a slim chance that you can revert back to an earlier version.

Boot issue with gateway gt5028

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the CPU. Try fishing around to find some way to try to make the computer "squeak". Like holding a key while it boots. This makes the computer make a warning tone. If it does so, I'd imagine there is activity. If any way possible you can try to test the CPU in a different comp. Oh, and have you done any work on it recently and how long has it been operating?

Try booting into safe mode by pressing F8 when boot up starts. Choose safe mode. When it's booted up, right click on "my Computer" and choose properties. Click on advanced and choose the advanced tab. Go to performance and change the settings of Virtual Memory to what Windows Recommends.Restart.
