can you get in windows safe mode by pressing F8, and get screen? it might be a display driver

You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers for your Windows operating system. This is a clear hard drive issue. Try reinstalling Operating System, If it fails again, probably you have to replace the hard drive

Try updated the video driver.

When you first boot go into the bios by pressing F2 and change to boot sequence to boot off of the cd-rom. Your going to need the Dell Password override cd. Find that and stick it in the drive. Boot up the system and as soon as it says press any key to continue, press any key and it should boot up into a dell windows restore screen and it will ask you if you want to restore the laptop, choose yes and go thru the prompts and it should allow you to restore the laptop to factory defaults.

There could be several things that could cause this actually.
1. the power supply could be bad and is not giving the correct voltage to the system board and thus it shuts off.
2. The voltage on the system board is overloading the Computers Processor so it shuts down
3. The Processor has or is going bad.

If you have another power supply or can borrow one, that would be the first thing I would try. If that doesn't fix the issue, you will need to have it serviced by a professional who can trouble shoot the problem with the proper equipment.
