Question about HP Compaq Presario v3000z Notebook
If you get Imminent Hard Drive error or SMART error during the POST in the BIOS sequence, it is clear that the Hard Drive of the Notebook is damaged and needs to be replaced.
However, to confirm this, you can check the Hard Drive of the Notebook from the Hard Drive Test utility in the BIOS.
Start or restart the Notebook and start tapping the F10 key which will take you to the BIOS Setup window.
In this, go to the Diagnostics or Tools tab using the Left or Right arrows in which you should find the Hard Drive Self Test utility.
Start the test by selecting the Utility using the Arrow keys and pressing Enter key.
This utility will take around 80 minutes to test the hard drive and if the result is fail, it is clear that the Hard Drive of the Notebook failed and needs to be replaced.

I doubt that re-installing the OS will help. Typically, prompts of drive failure mean just that. The solution is to replace the hard drive and re-install the OS.
