Blank screen but continued sound

I have a 50 in. Hitachi ultravision tv that is about 11 years old. It will turn on and within a few minutes the picture will go black but the sound will stay on. If you turn it off for a few minutes then back on it will do the same thing again and sometimes the picture will remain on indefinately. Can you help? Can it be fixed ? What should we have replaced?
