Question about Canon PowerShot A75 Digital Camera

Screen is black on playback & picture mode

I am having the same problem I have already sent it off once to be fixed by canon and they fix it once for free so I can't send it off again. There used to be this little thing I could do that I found online about switching between modes taking out the batteries and doing some other things but it's not working this time. I have pushed the display button and that is not working either. The weird thing is that I can see the screen in the panoramic mode but not in any other mode.

Have you tried taking pictures when the screen is black? Do the pictures also come out black? If so, try putting it in any mode other than auto and turning off the flash (don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the front of the lens and take a picture. You should see a little flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If you see this flicker, and you're still getting black pictures, then you likely have again encountered failure of the CCD. Canon will fix this again for you for free. See the following:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/canon-digital-cameras-showing-black.html
But if no flicker or movement is seen down the center of the lens when you took the picture, then you likely have a stuck shutter. Canon will not fix this for free. But no matter, there are a couple simple fixes for this that don't require opening the camera: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2009/05/simple-fix-for-stuck-shutter.html

When in camera mode screen black - no picture

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

No image in viewfinder or on screen

I found this solution on a different page and it fixed my camera that was having the same problem.

In the case where you get a black image, the following may be of help:

This is a common problem in older Canon S2 IS cameras, especially ones that have not been regularly used. What happens is that the lens iris gets stuck at a small aperture. Most often you can get function back. Here's how:

Turn the camera on in shooting mode.

Turn the mode selector to shutter priority ("Tv").

Use the four-way button on the back to set the shutter speed to 15 seconds. That's right, 15 seconds. (To do this you keep pressing the left direction on the four-way button until it goes from 1/1600 or whatever it might be all the way to 15")

Press the shutter release. Count to seven, then pop open the battery compartment.

Wait several seconds, then close the battery compartment.

You may need to repeat the above sequence several times to unstick the iris. If that does not accomplish it, you will likely have to send the camera in for repair.

Once you have it working again, you should use the camera regularly to keep it from sticking again.

This sounds like a pretty ghetto solution but it worked for me and I know it has worked for others. So before you go wasting your time writing letters, give this a shot.

Canon powershot a520 problem

Try to see if you can connect the cable to a TV and see if it will do the same thing.

Example: camera - cable plug - to Input of TV.

Black screen

If you can view pictures that were already taken before you ran into these problems, it may be that the sensor has gone bad. Please see this link for your options. (If you're not in the USA, your regional Canon service organization should provide you the same options.)

Black screen in shoot mode

The most common cause of this is a failed image sensor. Usually the playback mode will let you view pictures taken before the issue happened just fine and you will also be able to view the menu system just fine. When viewing the screen in an image taking mode, however, there is typically discolorations, horizontal or vertical lines, image bluring or distortions, or simply a black screen.

This situation, if caused by the image sensor, has to serviced and cannot be fixed by the user. If you are within your one year warranty and no user damage has been done to the camera, the camera will be fixed at no charge. If beyond the 12 month period however the customer may opt to have the unit repaired at a cost or take advantage of the Canon Loyalty Program and upgrade to refurbished S3 IS at an alternate discounted price.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB

Image looks with white verital striped lines in playback mode

Mine had the same problem (except the stripes are horizontal).  I sent it to Canon and sure enough it is the CCD problem that many of these have.  The good news is that it is covered under a recall and Canon will fix it free, including the shipping.

Can't take pictures

Defective mechanism,  a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.
