Keys on laptop stopped working

I have a toshiba satelite laptop and the 7 U J M and backspace keys have stopped working. I used canned air to blow out any dirt, but those keys still don't work. Anything I can try before I take it to a shop?

It may be a result of pressing these keys too hard although 7 key is unusual unless its one you use all the time but I do nitice that hese keys are grouped near vetically and so it may be the circuit secction of the keyboard. I think in this case the repaitr man may be the best option.

Toshiba Satelite L515 - S4960 Keyboard, some keys not working, have tried System Restore unsucessfully (unsecified error ocurred) Please help

System restore won't do it. If it is only some keys not working and others are, unless you've added some shortcut keys it sounds more like a problem with the keyboard itself and would have to be replaced. Sometimes it maybe dust or grit that is under a key/s and the key isn't fully compressing and making contact. You can carefully blow it out lightly and check for hair- human or pet hair can also mess up the contact.

If you happened to spill something on the keyboard that would wreck the keyboard too....

7,U,J, & M keys have stopped working. Laptop is stored in case, and has not had anything spilt on it. All these keys seem to have failed at the same time.

Unseat and reseat the keyboard into the slot that the ribbon cable goes in. If that doesn't work then go ahead and take a can of air and blow some air underneath the keys to make sure no dirt or dust is affecting the keys.

If that doesn't work then the keyboard is defective and would need to be replaced.

H, G and backspace keys stoppe working on

Though you could be having a hardware problem with just faulty keyboard keys, it could also be a trojan virus where someone has disabled those keys.

I advise rule out the virus with Mcafee virus free scan: http://us.mcafee.com/root/campaign.asp?cid=45694

you should also use a "trojan" scanner. (the type of virus)

HP DV9000 ''G'' ''H'' and backspace keys seem to not work on occasion

Sometimes the simplest things cause us the most grief. A starting point might be to turn the laptop upside down (be careful!). Then, use some compressed air (Dust Off, etc) to blow the keyboard. If there is trash in the keyboard, you might just blow it out -- and fix the problem.

If that doesn't work, you might consider having the keyboard replaced. I normally take them off the laptop and hit them with compressed air from the back before replacing the keyboard. That's an option you should pursue only if you feel comfortable with minor dis-assembly of your laptop.

I hope this helps. If it does, please rate the solution offered. My goal is always FixYa or Helpful, never TFT or IA. Regards,

Keyboard not responding or typing random letters

Sounds like the liquid has acted like a glue. You will need to get a cotton bud and dip it into some clean water. Try and clean the hole again and see if it still playing up. Also restart the computer and retry word to see if the same thing is happening.

N, H, T and Backspace keys suddenly not working.

You can try blowing it out with compressed air, but you will probably need to remove the keyboard to make sure nothing was spilled or stuck in there. You should be able to remove the keyboard by removing the battery, then removing the keyboard securing strip, and then you should be able to take a screwdriver and pry the keyboard up and out.
