Water dispensing problem

I just installed a new filter. I have water to my ice maker but no water out of the water dispenser. I took apart the coupling under the door and i get water to there. Is there another solenoid inside the door. What could this be?

Contact GE and notify them of the problem. Also let them know that you have located numerous other cases of the problem online of people with the same problem. They will set up a service call and will cover the cost of the parts.

OK guys, GE does have a solution to this problem and it's EXPENSIVE. I goofed and called GE repair. $263 later it was fixed. Here's what I've done to villify them:

This has already been sent to GE Corporation Appliance Park 6, Room 129 Louisville, KY. 40224 so don't send it to them. Send it to someone who may actually do something about this problem. I have a GE refrigerator, Model GSS25WGPAWW, S# AF 217252 which has had a continuing problem for several years. My first error was in not reporting this sooner. My home is in a gated community in which the developer used GE appliances exclusively. What I have determined now (after I paid for the repair) is that many residents have had the exact same problem: the in-door water dispenser freezes solid. The second mistake I made was calling GE repair to fix the problem. I was charged a total of $ 263.15 for the repair; $ 63.30 for the part, a flat rate of $79.95 for the repairman to show up and then $105.00 labor cost plus tax. Our community has an Internet based communications system ( Googlelist) and I posted the following message there. . My fellow residents responded that GE did fix many of the same problems at no charge after they call GE Customer Care rather than GE repair. Several others have paid for the repair. I then reported this to your sales department up until the 25th of March , I have received no reply. ____________________________________________________________________________ TO: Just thought you'd like to know: I live in a gated community with over 1400 residents and they all got the following message: Posted on Googlelist-at Herons Glen So my water line to the in-door dispenser kept freezing up. I'd have to turn the fridge off and open the freezer door for up to 5 hours for it to melt. Then 3 or 4 days later it would freeze again. So the GE repair guy came and installed a $63 part in about 20 minutes. It was a heat tape applied inside the dispenser cover. Now for the fun part: $79 just to show up and then $105 "labor" ??? That's about $315 per hour - my kind of job. Oh yea, another $14.90 in taxes. Once I had the part number, I found the part on-line for $42. Forget about it really being a manufacturing defect that should be covered by warrantee. GE does not care! They advertise how "energy conscious" they are and then solve a defect with a heat tape that adds heat to an appliance that's supposed to be cold! Go figure! If this offends any ex-GE employees....GOOD _____________________________________________________________________________________ When I subsequently called GE customer Care on March 25th I was told "we have no recalls on that model and there is nothing we can do". I've gone on-line and searched for "GE water dispenser" problems and, WOW, you've got lots of problems. On March 26 I got a reply from From: They gave me a Tracking Number and another phone number to call 1-888-348-7563. I called that number on 3-27-08 and got the same answer: "we have no recalls on that model, have a nice day". My question is: Will GE do something about this? I have $ 263.15 out of pocket cost, a copy of the repair bill is enclosed, for what appears to be a design flaw and that flaw has been repaired for others "at no cost". The real problem is that the water line is supposed to be installed against the front panel of the freezer door. During assembly they don't do this so some of the lines are against the inside edge of the door, they then "foam" the door and they freeze. The heat tape does fix the problem and you can do it yourself. I'm "GEsucks" for a real good reason. I've posted this on several web-sites and I'm looking for a lawyer to file a class action suit!

No there isn't another solenoid in the door but remember that the waterline is running through the freezer door so if your freezer is to cold or if the channel the waterline runs through in the door is running to close to the inside of the door(usually happens in produstion when they inject the foam in the door it moves the channel) it will freeze your waterline.

No Water going in to the fridge

Hi Norm,

Most fridges don't need a motor to run in order to dispense water. A simple on / off solenoid on the water line (same for the ice maker) that makes a click when changing from off to on and on to off is usually all anyone hears (the ice maker makes rumbling sounds and you can hear ice falling into the bin - too).

Check for ice. If it has a maker and it is making ice, the problem could be a defective water dispenser switch, solenoid or other circuit component or wire. If no ice, I'd suspect a filter or water supply issue.

Make sure the filter is fully inserted and twisted into place. Many filters have marks to align when 1) inserting and 2) to let you know when it is installed correctly. When sure it is installed correctly - try to dispense water again. Many fridges will dispense water without a filter. Check your manual before trying this though! If not working still, remove the filter and try to dispense water. If you're able to dispense water, the problem is either the installation of the filter or the filter itself. Try to re-install it correctly. Try to dispense water again.

If it still doesn't work - call the plumber back and ask why there's no water. Or - try this yourself:

Locate the point of attachment to the domestic water supply that the plumber used. There should be a valve to turn the water on and off. If off, turn ON. Try to dispense water again.

If that doesn't work - check to see if the fridge has pinched, kinked or crushed the water supply line. You may need to move the fridge forward to gain access to the water line and connection point on the fridge. Repair or replace the line as needed and route in such a way that moving the fridge in or out will not cause it to damage the line again.

Priming the Water Supply System
1. Begin filling the tank by pressing and holding a drinking glass against the water dispenser paddle. 2. Keep the glass in this position until water comes out of the dispenser. It may take about 1½ minutes. 3. Continue dispensing water for about three minutes to flush the system and plumbing connections of any impurities (stopping to empty the glass as necessary).
Ice Maker Operation & Care After the refrigerator is installed properly and has cooled for several hours, the ice maker can produce ice within 24 hours. The ice maker will fill the ice bin from the rear. You must dispense some ice to force the ice forward in the bin. This will allow the bin to fill completely.
Turning the Fresh Food Ice Maker On and Off Ice production is controlled by the ice maker's On/Off icon on the control panel. Press and hold the "Ice Off" icon for three seconds to turn the ice maker "ON" or "OFF". The ice maker is turned off when the LED above the "Ice Off" icon is illuminated.
Using the Ice Maker after Installation Before making ice for the first time, be sure to prime the water supply system. Air in new plumbing lines can result in two or three empty ice maker cycles. Furthermore, if the system is not flushed, the first ice cubes may be discolored or have an odd flavor.
For proper dispenser operation, recommended water supply pressure should fall between 30 psi and 100 psi. Excessive pressure may cause water filter to malfunction.
NOTE The water dispenser has a built-in device that shuts off the water flow after three minutes of continuous use. To reset this shutoff device, simply release the dispenser paddle.
IMPORTANT On occasion, unusually small ice cubes may be noticed in the bucket or in dispensed ice. This could occur in normal operation of the ice maker. If you start seeing these more frequently, it may be an indication of low water pressure or the water filter needs to be replaced. As the water filter nears the end of its useful life and becomes clogged with particles, less water is delivered to the ice maker during each cycle. Remember, if it's been six months or longer since you last changed your water filter, replace the water filter with a new one. Poor quality household water may require the filter to be changed more frequently.
IMPORTANT Your ice maker is turned on at the factory so it can work as soon as you install your refrigerator. If you cannot connect a water supply, set the ice maker's On/Off icon to Off and turn off the water supply valve; otherwise, the ice maker's fill valve may make a loud chattering noise when it attempts to operate without water.

The water dispenser in the door of my Kenmore side by side will not work. The ice dispenser does work. What do I need to do to fix it?

Water despenser

The water dispensing valve may not be functioning, if the valve buzzes or hums when the water dispenser is pressed the valve may be mechanically deficient, if there is no sound whatsoever the switch for the dispenser,the dispensing valve coil or its electrical connections may have failed.

Freezer does not make ice

You need to check and see if ice maker has any water init. if not check the fill tube that goes thru the back wall for stoppage while you have it out rin the maker thru a harvest mode and listen for the sounds of the solonoid opening. If tube is full you'll need to replace the slow leaking valve a common problem. for parts call 704-819-6557

Dispenser problem

nope. if your ice maker is making ice, then there is no problem with your water filter.

i'm thinking you have a problem with the micro switch that is being triggered when you press the dispenser. or the board where it is attached to choose from water to crushed or cube...

either one of those but definitely not the water filter.

Ice maker not getting water after changing filter

Check the following:
 Is the freezer door closed completely?
 Is the ice storage bin installed correctly?
 Is there ice in the storage bin?
 Has the ice frozen in the storage bin?
 Is ice stuck in the delivery chute?
 Has the wrong ice been added to the storage bin? Use only
cubes produced by the current ice maker.
 Has the ice melted around the auger (metal spiral) in the
ice bucket?
Dump the ice cubes and clean the ice storage
 Is the ice dispenser stalling while dispensing “crushed”
Change the ice button from “crushed” to “cubed.” If
cubed ice dispenses correctly, depress the button for
“crushed” ice and begin dispensing again.
 Has the dispenser arm been held in too long? Ice will stop
dispensing when the arm is held in too long. Wait 3 minutes
for dispenser motor to reset before using again.

The ON/OFF switch is located on the top right side of the freezer
To turn the ice maker on, slide the control to the ON (left) position.
To manually turn the ice maker off, slide the control to the OFF
(right) position.
NOTE: Your ice maker has an automatic shutoff. The ice maker
sensors will automatically stop ice production, but the control will
remain in the ON (left) position

 Allow 24 hours to produce the first batch of ice. Discard the
first three batches of ice produced.
 The quality of your ice will be only as good as the quality of the
water supplied to your ice maker. Avoid connecting the ice
maker to a softened water supply. Water softener chemicals
(such as salt) can damage parts of the ice maker and lead to
poor quality ice. If a softened water supply cannot be avoided,
make sure the water softener is operating properly and is well

The Dispenser Lock (on some models)
Your dispenser can be turned off for easy cleaning or to prevent
unintentional dispensing by small children and pets.
NOTE: The lock feature does not shut off power to the product, to
the ice maker, or to the dispenser light. It simply deactivates the
dispenser levers. The ice and water dispensers will not work.
Style 1: Press the LOCK BUTTON to lock the dispenser. Press the
UNLOCK button to unlock the dispenser.
Style 2: Press and hold the LOCK OUT button to lock the
dispenser. Press and hold the LOCK OUT button a second time to
unlock the dispenser.

the water line is frozen inside the door. very common ge problem. you can defrost the dispenser area with a hair dryer. it takes about 30 min to do. it will freeze up again. if the frig is less than 3 years old, even though it out of warranty you can argue with ge and youll get a new door to fix the problem
