120GB wd external shows up under bios and DM but not my computer

When i connect the hard drive it says that it is connected under the computer bios and under device manager and is working properly with up to date drivers but it will not show an icon under my computer. I tried it on two computers and am getting the same thing. My computers are both running amd processors running at 2.0 ghz with a gig of ram with windows xp pro. If someone could help me i would appreciate it. Thank you.

It seems as if the drive is damaged.

To see if you can just erase the partition on it, recreate it and see if that works:

Right click on "My Computer", go to "Manage", then Disk Management. You'll probably find the external drive in the list there.

Delete the partition you see, and recreate it from the same menu. Format the partition you just created, all through the same menu.

Good luck!

Hope I helped,
tom

Assuming both PC's have SP3 installed there's a registry patch Windows put out to address the problem you're experiencing. Here is a link to the fix. Hopefully, this will solve your problem. Best of luck.

My toshiba external hard drive wont work in 360, the portable device option is not highlighted once it is connected, the external is getting powered from the xbox though.

When you first put in your External hard drive to your computer, did it ask you if you wanted to use as a sort of passport or did it not give you any options at all like Usb flash drive. you should not have any special program on for the External hard drive. It should just be set up to store data and nothing else. I had a similar dilemma with a WD passport. When i put it on my 360 it did not work. then i just made the drive like a plain storage device and the xbox could read and play my files.

My computer hangs when I start it up until I remove the WD 320 GB External USB connection - then it will restart ok. I have to then reconnect the hd. - what can I do about this?

It sounds like it is trying to boot from the external drive, go into the BIOS settings and disable boot from external device and see if that cures it.

That could even be a USB problem, I have the same one, my issue turn out to be just power. You are not the first one to have that problem. Replace the USB cord and see if that affects anything.

Hi, my WD hard drive is connected to my macbook, but can't access

check under the system profiler which can be found in the applications folder and then in the utilities folder. See if under usb whether the drive is showing under there. If it is, open up disk utility and use the verify disk to see if there is a problem with the drive, if there is use the repair disk to repair it.

Other things to check try a different usb port on the macbook or a different usb cable.

Hope this helps

External Hard Drive connected but hidden !!!

Connect it to your computer.
Right click on my computer and select Manage
On the left side click on Disk management.

Now on the right side, look around and see if you spot the external drive there.

What do you see there?

Also look into device manager, then look for anything with ! or ? yellow marks.

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.
