Question about NetGear : WG111 54 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter, RETAIL (DSNGWG111)

1 Answer

Netgear WG111 doesn't see D-Link DIR-655 wireless network

My mother-in-law uses msn tv.  I bought the net gear wg111 wireless usb because it's one of few that actually works with msn tv.  Before I bought the dir-655, I had a netgear wgr614 wireless router and the msntv worked but it was slow. However, I was also having intermittent problems with loss of internet connection on msn tv, on my wife's dell laptop and my osx desktop... so I bought the new router.
I've got the d-link router set up and while the mac and dell work well, the msntv does not see the d-link router.  The wg111 must be working because I do see an neighbor's wireless network; just don't see the d-link.  My iphone can pick up the wireless network from the same room as the msntv so I'm not sure what the problem is.
msntv said to check with d-link d-link said to check with netgear or msntv can't find any info with netgear can't find any solution after searching the net for answers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm slowly going insane :)

Thanks for getting back to me.

The d-link can auto search for the best frequency.  According to the specs I looked up, the wg111 can pick up the same frequencies as the d-link.  However, I tried to use just one channel in wpa personal on the d-link.. The wg111 still doesn't see the d-link.  This is really frustrating :)  What the heck is the difference between the d-link 655 and the Net gear wgr614 router I did have (that worked with the wg111)???

I would have replaced the wg111 a long time ago but unfortunately, the MST TV unit can only use a small handfull of specific USB wireless devices and, even then, only with specific firmware versions.  I'll try the G standard on the D-Link and see it that works.

Isn't there anything out there that a person can connect to the internet (with broadband) with out the complications of using a PC???  There are plenty of elderly people out there who just can't deal with PC's; all they need is something simple where they press a button to surf and access email.

BTW: that should have been "MSN TV" formally called WEB TV...

Hi Joe,

I would suggest you to change the wireless channel on the Dlink and use the channel on which WG111 will scan and connect to your network. Also, plese make sure to use the security encryption on the DLINK to WEP or WPA only. Using higher security like WPA2 will cause issues with this adapter.

Well, D Link is N standard wireless router. Whereas, WGR614 works on G standard. This adater WG111 is also a G standard adapter. So, its a kind of compatibility issue.

Though Dlink should work fine with the G standard adapter as is it is backward compatible. However, the network will be unstable as in your case.

The best thing you can do is to replace the WG111 adapter with N standard adapter. Also, you may try changing the mode on the Dlink to G standard and check if it works for your WG111 adapter.

    Hope this helps.

Cannot find a driver to download for mac-----netgear wg111

Should work with Snow Leopard too. Otherwise there's a workaround using the Realtek 8187B driver, which is what's really inside your WG111.

WG111 see network but won't stay connected

I would ensure that the product is operational by swapping it with the other WG111, then ensure that you have the card setup properly, make sure you have the lastest drivers from Netgear, I have fixed some problem with the WG111 in this fashion. If that fails then I would try upgrading to a 2.0 usb. i'll try to see if I can create this with and old machine I'll keep you posted
