John Deere 310 A reverser problem

I have an older 310A

which runs very well. I have an occaisional problem with the reverser. It sometimes won't go into reverse and this problem will continue for a time until I think its done for and then it starts working again just fine. Its currently on the fritz. Forward works well all the time. The Shift lever moves to the reverse position but nothing engages. When selecting forward you can feel the lever engage but reverse feels different. Like its not engaging anything. I don't think the problem is internal because it comes and goes. I suspect a linikage problem. Any advice is appreciated.

Check first to see if the drive belt has jumped off a pulley or the belt is stretched or broken. Next if there is a grinding noise it means the transmission has a broken or chewed up gear.

Hello there:
I would first check to see if there is any binding in the deck belt's or gears and make sure that the deck is not set to low that you are cutting dirt instead of grass also make sure that all of the rods and opins are secure and are not bent ok?
best regards mike

SOURCE: need owner's and service manuals for John Deere Model 317/

First off, Mowerman's response was incorrect about the age of a JD 317.  They were made from 1979 to 1982.
You can only get manuals either through here:  or from a dealer.  They're expensive.  You can find them on ebay and also here: but I haven't used that site.

Have a john deere sabre turn key won't start thought battery was dead charged battery still won't start jump start with car battery it will start then . try to engage reverse with blades running it...

Some mowers have a mowing reverse safety switch. That safety will kill the mower if you try to reverse with the deck engaged. Some mowers even have an override button that has to be held while backing up. As for the battery thing, no matter how much you charge a bad battery you will not get it to start a mower if it has a bad cell or two. I would use a multimeter to check battery voltage, but the end result would still be the same, replace the battery.

I hope this gets you going again.

Radiator water in oil of my John Deere 310A backhoe. What steps do I take to repair.

You have either a blown head gasket, cracked block or craacked head. Major work ahead. Hopefully, the water didn't mess up your main bearings.
