I could connect online a couple times, then one time i accidentally plugged the other end of my ethernet cable into the wrong device. (by wrong device i mean that i have a regular cable modem for my internet, and i have a phone modem from my cable company that for some reason has an ethernet port on the back of it. i plugged it into the phone modem) the ps2 tried to connect online, after failing a couple time, i realized i had hooked it to the wrong device, after connecting the ps2 to the correct modem, it now fails every time while trying to connect to the isp. it times out, my modem is online, it works on the computer, but not the ps2..is there any way that i can fix this problem im having without getting a new motherboard???

Re: connecting online with ps2 slim
On some models, the Ethernet comes from a PC board searate from the Motherboard. Now you can get a motherboard replaced for under $60. Check out the playstationclinic. Nothing you can really do if the Ethernet Chip is blasted.

make sure you have the Ps2 network adapter on your PS2. After that just simply connect and Ethernet cable to the back of the adapter. The other end of the cable goes to your router of course. Turn on router make sure you have a connection on your computer.( e.g. internet works) Then turn on your ps2, put in a game with online capabilities. Go to the online section of the game and create your account. And there you go, you should be connected. Keep in mind some ps2 online might not work they might of taken the servers done since PS3 is now primarily used online.
the Slim version bring some technical improvements, but the overall game quality is pretty the same.
The Slim is smaller and lighter (about 1/4 of the size of its phatty predecessor) in fact. It also has greatly enhanced online gaming capabilities due to the presence of a new Ethernet port, network connection, and phone line.
Hope this helps,
So long as the modem uses an ethernet connection, it should work. The ethernet cable that you normally route into your computer, simply plug it in the ethernet plug on the back of the ps2. When you use an online multiplayer enabled game, you'll simply have to go through the setup of it registering your information.
Turns out you can absolutely use the PS2 to play online games!
You need to buy a NETWORK ADAPTER for it, which is in itself a 56K
modem that includes a ETHERNET plug, so you can connect with just a
regular phone line (slow), or connect your broadband modem/router by
way of the ETHERNET cable (fast!)
You may need to buy a MEMORY CARD, and even a HARD DRIVE for some games, so its not free there.....
The information is a bit extensive for all the questions you may have,
so I have included the following great links for you to peruse.
The problem is with the disc drive itself. Most common problem is the give in the spindle starts to go and gets to be to much and you get floating of the disc while in play. If the system is still in waranty I would sudgest contacting the MFG and getting it fixed or replaced. If not in waranty then your only other choice is to find another system for cheap and rape it for parts and replace the drive.
