There's probably nothing wrong with the HDD. It's the xbox 360. Check the multi-pin input jack on top to see if it looks loose. Either way, you may need to have MS repair it. But my xbox had a similar problem, and I just put a bit more pressure on the top of the HDD while putting it in, and it started connecting again.

I took my xbox 360 rounnd to a friends house, ive bought the console home and it seems to have wiped my gamertag it wont let me recover saying theres no storage device, can you help.. thanks, Darren

Remove the hard drive from the Xbox and then reinsert it. It is possible that during the move that something happened.

Go into your system setup and check the memory. It should show your hard drive and any usb memory cards that might be installed.

Well my 360 is messing up and i has one red light say E74 and i took the HDD out and rrestarted the system and it still showed up. how do i fix it?

Normally, the E74 error code pertains to a memory storage device connected tot he console having some errors. If the issue persists without the HDD attached, it is most likely due to a general hardware failure thus your console needs repair. Try to contact MS Xbox Support and see if your warranty is still up for a free repair or check your local technician maybe they can fix it for you.

My xbox 360 has one red light with a message of E73

E73 is an error code meaning that the system is encountering a hardware failure. This might be due to a failing memory storage device attached to it. You can try to turn off your console and remove the hard drive and start it on without the HDD attached. If it works, you can try to format your HDD and try it again. If still does not work even the HDD was removed, then it is an internal hardware failure and you have to contact support for it to be fixed..

Xbox 360 system will not reade any kind of storage format, like hard drive or flash drive in the usb slot.

If you have the Spring 2010 console update installed on your 360 console, you have to configure the USB device it before it is recognized by your Xbox 360 console. Connect your device, go to My Xbox menu, go to System Settings, then choose Memory. From here, select "USB Storage Device", and choose "Configure Now".
Your device will need at least 1GB free storage, and your console can use 16GB maximum of all attached USB storage devices total. Move the slider to configure the space to use & press the A button to set. Your USB device should be listed as a storage memory unit now!

Philips Mobile Storage Device SPD5300CC/96K Incompatible XP?

After consultation with the shop which sold the drive, they helped me work out the problem. Which was that the drive I was attempting to use in the Philips enclosure, had an OS on it, which was conflicting with the OS on my current HDD. So, that particular drive will need to be connected another way to access the information.
