Question about HP vs17c 17" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Hewlett-Packard vs17 half fixed, what to do next?

I am attempting to repair a Hewlett-Packard vs17 LCD monitor. When I initially examined the inverter circuit board it was evident that 4 electrolytic capacitors had failed. They were replaced and the monitor went from having a blinking blue power button and showing absolutely nothing to a state where the power button remained on without flashing and the expected images were displayed on the screen for about a second before fading to black. I again the removed the inverter board . Upon close inspection, components of the circuit board show no obvious damage. There are no areas of darkening on the board. There are no hints of thermal damage whatsoever. I understand that cold solder joints may present problems and I inspected the board as closely as I can and have not found any. If this were a Benq inverter board I would know which joints were most likely to be problematic but for this board I have no idea. Without some evident sign of damage I am unsure of how to proceed. One additional piece of information that may or may not be of any importance is this fact: the monitor in question had been running for several years without being turned off. There was no problem with picture quality or brightness. Only after being turned off and attempting to restart it did the monitor display no picture and a flashing power button. Can anybody suggest what steps to take next?

I have also seen this type of problem. Have you checked the large caps on the inverter board, no just the power supply board? Many LCD monitors have 2 caps on the inverter and I have had to replace them from time to time. The next thing to check would be the driver transistors. I hope this helps.

G4-1215dx screen is dark

A dark screen means the inverter maybe faulty or the CCFL lamp at the bottom of the LCD is faulty.

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :-

How do I fix the HP Pavilion g6-1b70us flickering issue?

The problem is in the inverter board or the backlight behind the LCD is going. Hook a spare monitor to the video output usually on the back , if pictue okay! the problem is in the above mentioned, but if both screens show the same symptom the Video Graphics Card is the problem, you can reduce the brightness to off set the flicker, "might work"

Hp laptop only half a screen

Hook a spare monitor to the video output on the back, if picture is okay! it means the LCD panel is defective and screen must be replaced, however if same symptoms show on spare monitor it indicates a bad video graphics card normally built into the motherboard.

Hi, The problem with my Monitor is that after the

That LCD monitor uses a fluorescent backlight, and the symptom you are seeing probably means the backlight is failing. There are two possible problems:
1) Likely: The inverter board is failing. The inverter creates the high voltage needed to run the backlight and can shut down after a short time if the board is failing.
2) Less likely: The fluorescent tubes themselves are failing. This usually requires replacing the whole LCD screen, although experienced technicians can disassemble the LCD screen and change the bulbs. This is much riskier.
The best bet is to replace the whole monitor. If you are willing to take apart the monitor and try a repair, you may be able to get an inverter and fix the problem.
Sellers on eBay usually carry a lot of models of inverters and may be able to sell you one and guide you through a replacement. However, this is a moderately advanced repair.
Search for the HP exact model and "inverter" on eBay

Monitor hpvs17e stays on for second and goes blank

gldngrlz411, most likely problem with internal "switch-mode-power-supply" / CCFL inverter supply that provides 600 to 1000 volts ac to light the CCFL tubes that provide "white light" so you can see what is on the glass LCD panel!! Explore here first: http://www/ If vs17e does same when connected to a different "known good" pc, then you will need to make big decision!!! FIX or Trade in for new wide screen unit. 12fixlouie

My monitor is flashing different colors... it wont start up

chanel_luv_u, Could be possible internal SMPS/CCFL inverter power supply problem. If the PC is ok with different "known-good" monitor connected to PC, then vs17 monitor will need some work done on it. Do some reading here first for some clues!!! The first place I would look at on ANY ccfl back-lit lcd monitor that starts doing "very strange things" would be the units "switch-mode-power-supply/CCFL inverter circuit". Try YOUTUBE for video clips of DIY lcd monitor repair to see if unit can be fixed for less than $6 in parts. Keep this in mind though, Your vs17 isn't any different than any other ccfl back-lit lcd monitor in it's basic design and operation. Do some reading of fixya LCD monitor technicians profiles for more info. Let us know what plans you have after you do your research. Bye for now. 12fixlouie
