That sounds normal.....you just need to install the printer drivers, as the Pc sharing this printer does not know how communicate with the printer without the drivers.

for updated drivers see the manufacturers website. (as you have not given model or manu I cannot locate drivers for you.)

SETTING UP A SHARED NETWORK PRINTER

Any printer that is connected to a computer and is connected on a LAN can be configured so all other computers on the same network can print to this printer. This means the computer with the printer attached to it MUST be booted up at all times when other computers want to access the printer.
You need to install the printer driver on the computer and configure it as a Shared printer.
The other computers on the network need to add this printer to their computer.
Follow these steps to set-up a shared network printer -
1. Connect the printer to the computer and install the printer driver.
2. Open Printers and Faxes - right click on this printer and click Sharing - click Sharing tab and click
Share this printer, and then if you wish you could change the Share name, then click OK
3. Right click on the printer - click Properties - click Print Test Page to confirm printer installation.
Follow these steps to configure the computers on your network :-
1. Open Printers and Faxes - click Add a printer - Next - select a network printer, or a printer attached
to another computer - Next.
2. Select Browser for a printer - Next
3. Click on and expand the Microsoft Windows Network down to the computer with the printer - Next
4. Select Yes for - Use this printer as the default printer - Next - Finish
5. Right click on the printer - click Properties - click Print Test Page to confirm printer installation.

MP620 WIRELESS SET UP

1. Determine the Type of Wireless Printer

You'll be using the wireless router to connect the new wireless printer to your home network so make sure the router is up and running. Most new computers and wireless printers are equipped with either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi capabilities. If your printer is not wireless you can purchase a wireless card that plugs into a USB port.
2. Select the Location of the Wireless Printer

The wireless printer should be set up in a place at home or in the office that is accessible to everyone and where there is ample space for paper, printer ink and other supplies. If you are using Bluetooth wireless you may want to give this some thought since Bluetooth printers have a smaller wireless range than Wi-Fi printers.
3. Enable Printer Sharing

The server computer's operating system must be informed that the printer you are adding to the network is a wireless printer. (The server computer is the one the printer is connected to.)

In Windows Vista, this is done by accessing the network settings in the Control Panel and then activating file and printer sharing in the local area network settings.

For Windows XP go to Start, Control Panel, Printers and Other Hardware, "View installed printers or fax printers." Right-click on your printer and select "Sharing", then select "Share this Printer." Give the printer a name and click OK.
4. Add the Wireless Printer to any other Computers on your Network

The other computers on the network must also be set up for using the wireless printer. To do this in Windows Vista, open the Control Panel in the classic view and then open Printers. Right click on the printer that is going to be shared, and then open Properties. In Properties, check the box that allows the printer to be a shared device.

For Windows XP you will need to do the following:

  • Open Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, and click on "Add a printer."
  • This will take you into a wizard to find the printer you shared previously.
  • Click Next until you are at the Local or Network Printer page.
  • Select "A network printer or a printer attached to another computer" and click Next.
  • Now click "Browse for a printer" and click Next. This will display your workgroup, the PCs connected to it and any printers that are attached to them.
  • Click on the wireless printer you shared earlier and click Next. [This should install the driver automatically. If not, you may need to get the CD software that came with the printer.]
  • Now click Yes to make the wireless printer the default printer for this PC (or No if the computer already has one attached to it).
  • Click Finish.
5. Troubleshooting Wireless Printers

Both this computer and the one the wireless printer is attached to might need a reboot. If you're not seeing the computer it is attached to, double-check that all computers have the same network name: go to Control Panel, Performance & Maintenance, "See basic information about your computer." From there click on "Computer Name" and your workgroup will be displayed.

If you're not seeing the printer, make sure it's switched on. If printer still doesn't work, you may need to install the printer driver using the software CD that came with it.

My printer won't talk to the computer, os windows xp. connect through usb cable.

Through a USB cable, the printer should be considered a shared printer. Go into Printers and Faxes through the start menu and ensure that it is installed correctly. If this does not solve, ensure that the correct software and dirvers are installed. Consulting your manual for installation is always handy as a specific order of processes may be necessary for a Printer to be recognised

Print from nokia E63 through WIFI

Try connecting your printer directly to the wifi router/switch in a shared network configuration. Then go to your router settings, find the local ip address add this as the 'host'. Your settings should be as follows:

Driver : HP Mobile Printing
Bearer: Socket/HP Jetdirect
Access Piont: My Home Wifi (kaba)
Host : ip address of you printer
user : Blank ( tried my windows username,no use)
port : 9100
Printer Model: Officejet Printers

You will have to reconfigure your drivers on your pc as well. Mine installed as a wireless shared printer even though the printer is not wireless but I have it connected to my wifi switch for sharing and it worked fine.

Good luck

Cannot share printer w/laptop(wireless)w/ PC

You need to share the printer. Go to your pc and open up the printers (Start button, Printers and Faxes). Right click on your printer that you want to share and then click sharing. Make sure share this printer is checked and list this printer in directory is checked. Now you should see the printer on the laptop when you click the Add printer and choose browse for printers or something to that effect. It will prompt you to install the drivers for this printer on the laptop. Click Yes or OK and you should be good to go. Make sure you have the printer turned on prior to doing any of this. You will also need the PC attached to the printer turned on when printing.
