Question about Harley Davidson Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Desktop Telephone

I have a 72 shovelhead engine and I want to know what type of spark plugs can I use in it instead of harley davidson and also what would be the best oil to use in it instead of harley davidson also? About how many quarts would I put in it too? I think 4 but not sure. Thank you for your help!!

Amsoil 20w-50? Depends where you are and what you can get. I think there is a rev-tech oil to suit your shovel, but can't remember the spec off hand. Havoline 20w-50? Oil debates seem to rage on forever on most H-D forums around the world. Have found for me the H-D stuff is about the same price as the rest, and just as good/bad as them.
As for quantity, I'm thinking it is about 31/2 to 4 quarts, as you said.

1972 Harley Davidson FLH 1200 no spark


Hi, Jzpaznthru and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting/leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module.
7. Faulty pulse coil.
8. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
9. Faulty ignition switch.
10. Faulty run/off switch
11. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
12. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

How do i rebuild a 1972 shovelhead harley primary unit


To rebuild the primary of '72 Shovelhead is far too much to type out here. Besides, you'll need some pictures to help you identify a few things. You know the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words". In this case, it's true. I'd suggest that you purchase a service manual. The best one that I've found is a Clymer's Manual, number M420 for Shovelhead 1966-1984. The factory manuals have been condensed so much that I think they rank second to this book. If you have a specific question, I can help there but to type out the entire process would be like me writing a book but without pictures.

How to time spark


To be perfectly honest with you, I don't know how to set the timing on a Twin Cam because I don't work on them. I do work on all Harley's prior to the Twin Cam.

With that being said, the way we'd do it on an Evo engine is remove the timing plug on the left side of the engine. Find the advanced timing mark and use a strobe light to check the timing with the engine running fast enough so that it would be at maximum advance. If we had to change the timing, we'd loosen the sensor plate in the timer cavity on the right side of the engine and rotate the plate in whichever direction we needed to move the timing, clockwise to ****** the timing, counterclockwise to advance it.

However, the Twin Cam gets it's timing pulses off of the left flywheel in the crankcase. Since it uses those pulses to determine the position of the crank, the timing may be set electronically instead of physically moving something. Maybe I'll buy myself a manual and see how Harley does it for myself.

I'm sorry I can't help you but I've got all the work I can handle working on the older bikes from Panheads, Shovelheads, Ironheads, Evo, and even the Italian Harleys and Hummers. I'm working on a Harley Topper right now for a guy.

The bike is a 06 streetglide when you throttle the bike under load the oil pressure drops what would be the cause


I don't know too much about the oil pumps in the Twin Cam engines. I have never worked with one of them but I've got extensive experience with the older type pump used on the Shovelheads and Evolution engines.

A Harley engine employs a high volume low pressure oiling system. The old Shovelheads would actually show no oil pressure when idling hot with most gauges. The oil pressure switch would cut the light off at four pounds of oil pressure. A Harley engine will not hold a lot of oil pressure because the engine is built using roller bearings instead of shell bearings.

As long as the tappets are not rattling, you don't have a problem with oil pressure. If your oil pressure drops too low, the tappets are hydraulic and they will rattle like hell. There will be no doubt in your mind as to the problem.

Now, back to your question as to why the oil pressure on your bike drops when accelerating under a load, I have no idea.

1972 shovelhead engine needs spark plugs and oil!


I have a 75 FLH and I use the Bosch Platinum WR8DP if you have the long plug if you have the short one it is W8AP, they are an exelent plug. As for the oil I use Rev-Tech grade 60 but you should stick with one kind of oil and for a FLH it is 4 qts.
