Why do I need to update drivers
A disk defrag sorts and organizes files in a more logical/easier to locate by the system. The reason you need to do this every once in a while, is that the system can only use the current available space, to store files, where the defrag puts them in order, and stores them in a contiguous fashion. So the system only has 1 place to look for data stored on disk, instead of the data being in several places. I realize this is a simple analogy of the process. In short, it will improve performance.
You may also want to check to see if your defrag software can handle a "Boot time" defrag (defragments files that are normally locked by the operating system, because they are in use), and a registry defrag, which is usually done with a boot time defragment pass. The benefits along with improved performance, is faster boot up time.
Periodic driver and firmware updates are needed to fix past issues with previous driver versions, and more commonly too add new or fix compatibility issues. They almost always come with a change log, or update information, stating the changes made to each version by the developer. As stated previously, get them from the manufacturers website only. Automated driver updaters, while good on paper, often come with crapware and toolbar junk apps, that clutter and choke a system to death. As an admin, I probably spend far too much time de-junking users' computers because of this kind of crapware.
Pay special attention to the dialogues during installation of many freebies and web downloads. They often will have check boxes for disabling installation of the aforementioned crapware. :)
