The door may be sagging or the door gasket could be torn or loose from the door. whats happening is the moisturew in the air is forming ice build up. check and make sure the door and gasket are completely closed.

Excess water dripping into refrigerator from freezer. I am in the process of defrosting. Ice build up behind freezer back wall. Do I need a new heater or will clearing the ice from drains suffice?

Hello,

Clearing the ice build up is a good start, the problem though is the drain pan under the coil in the freezer thats iced up is blocked so when the defrost heater comes on and melts the frost from that coil,it the water is collecting in the freezer and in many cases drips into the fresh food compartment, clearing the drain will resolve your leaking/ice build up issue.THE DEFROST HEATER IS GOOD melting the frost in the first place and hence forth that melted frost stays in the freezer and becomec ice.

Drain plug freezes up and ice builds up in freezer then leaks into frig. How do you keep the drain free from building up?

Use a turkey baster filled with very hot water and flush it several times. That should resolve the problem. Also check the door gasket, if it is leaking, excessive frost would be visible causing more water then the system was designed to handle.
Good Luck,

If the defrost heating element, defrost timer or evaporater fan weren't working, you'd develop a block of ice on the evaporator. Is the compressor running? If it is, it might have bad valves from the frost buildup scenario. Liquid refrigerant could have gotten to the suction valves. The sealed system should have a five year warranty. Might be time to call a pro

During the defrost cycle heaters inside the walls of the freezer turn on to melt the frost. The melted frost "water" is supposed to drain into a pan under the fridge where it will evaporate. I think the drain line from the freezer to this pan may be blocked. I'd also check the seal on the freezer door. If it's not sealing well it lets a lot of moisture into the freezer which means more water during the defrost cycle. I'd also recommend checking to make sure the ice maker is not leaking.

yeah , the coil patern of most chest freezers run the evaperaton loop around the top of the freezer down about 6 to 8 inches to start the frost patern, knowing that cold air falls it then works down and cools the rest of the freezer and its contents hope this fixed your problem

It sounds like the drainage for the defrost water is plugged or obstructed somehow. The ice build up is left over water that is freezing due to the fact that it has not been channeled out properly and when the cycle comes back on it freezes.
look for the collection pan underneath the fridge, access the tube ending to there, blow some air through it. Compressed works best if you have access to some. Also I would advise doing this after the unit has been off for a short while, sometimes the plug will be frozen, so give it time to melt just in case. When you blow on the tube there should be no back pressure, this will tell you if the plug has been removed.
