Question about Troy Bilt Tiller/Edger 26cc, Model No. 21at144r766

When I pull the cord it makes a snapping sound and does not turn the engine over. If I pull it slowly it will turn the engine over but I can't pull it hard enough to start it.

Pull the spark plug, and then pull the motor thru a few pulls. Clean the pull with small wire brush, and reinstall. If the motor still pulls hard, it may have gotten moisture in the fuel.
drain fuel completely and pour fresh in.

Pull cord binding when mounted on engine but not when removed from engine


When you assemble the Recoil Starter, push it down onto the blower easily and then pull the cord slowly. It should drop into position as you slowly pull the cord.

remove starter houseing cut old rope out then rewind it till it stops slip new rope through houseing hole and pull hole put a screw driver threw houseing and pulley to make it so it cannot unwind then not the pulley end of rope take a lighter heat knot this will make sure it will not unknot hold rope pull out screw driver pull rope until knott is seat to pully slowly let cord rewind cord until it stops pull out two tune of pully install handle put knot in it and heat the knot with a lighter done cut excess cord off reinstall the red neck let me no if you get have problem like motor dont star or is hard to start

    • 1 Locate the red button on the top of the handlebars. This is called the "kill switch." When you pull it up the engine can run; when you push it down, the engine will shut off immediately.
    • 2 Pull the kill switch up.
    • 3 Turn the key to the "on" position.
    • 4 Make certain the cord running from the key is attached to the steering column. This device acts in the same manner as the kill switch - the engine will run only when it is secured.
    • 5 Pull the start cord, which looks like an enlarged lawnmower pull-cord and is generally found on the right side of the machine.
    • 6 Listen to the engine - if it starts, let it get going slowly . If it "pops" but does not continue to run, try pulling the start cord a few more times. If you do not hear the engine turn over at all, proceed to the next step.
    • 7 Find the pull tab under the right side of the handlebars. This is called the choke - it often has a circle with a diagonal line through it. The choke helps to start an engine when the weather is very cold or the machine hasn't been used in a while. When using the choke, try leaving it on only long enough to hear the engine fire a couple times, then return it to the "off" position. A choke left on too long can flood the engine.
    • 8 Place the choke in the vertical position - this is called the half choke position. Pull the start cord several times. If the engine fires up, place the choke back down to its original position and let it slowly warm up. If the engine still has trouble starting, proceed to the next step.
    • 9 Pull the choke 180 degrees from its original position - this is called the full choke. Pull the start cord until the engine sputters a couple times.
    • 10 Replace the choke to the original off position and continue to pull the cord. The engine should fire up and settle into a steady hum, ready for fun in the snow.

I have a 5.5 hp gx 160 honda engine. i had to replace the pull rope & now it will not recoil after starting. what did i miss?


re -do it and make sure it's on properly , do not let it snap back hard...that will screw it up every time. Pull it and slowly let it slide beck in. hope that helps

My neighbor just gave me a Troy Bilt 020207 power washer. It is 2450 PSI and 2 GPM. He snapped the pull cord rope. I looked at the pull cord cover and it seems to have 3 rivets holding it to the main...


sounds like a briggs engine, DONT remove the rivits, go down a little further and remove the 4 3/8 bolts that hold the blower housing on.Turn it upside down, prewinf the pulley in the direction that it turns when the rope is being pulled. When it stops turning because the spring is tight, let it unwind one turn and line up the hole in the pulley with the hole in the metal part where the rope comes in and slip the rope in, tie a not and melt the freyed end. Let the starter pull the rope in by itself.

I want to change the pull crd on my 6.5 hp craftsman lawnmower


remove the engine shroud. Pull the cord all the way out. Put a screw driver into the fins so it does not unwind. Cut new cord and install through hole in shroud and the rewinder. Reattach handle to cord and hold onto rope and pull screw driver out. Slowly let cord rewind. Pull a couple of times to make sure it is working. While engine shroud is off us a piece of emery cloth or fine sandpaper to clean off the magnets on fly wheel and the two little prongs close to the fly wheel.

Toro GT5 lawnmower - the pull cord (to start the engine) only comes out about 3 inches - I'm afraid to pull to hard for fear of breaking the line.


First - remove spark plug and squirt 3mls of engine oil in there - replace spark plug and leave overnight.

Try pulling that start handle !
Two things may happen - it snaps or - it turns over.
If it turns over - prime fuel and start in choke setting.
If the cord snaps - undo the pull start block - and take it to a lawnmower spares depot, and buy some more cord. It's quite cheap.
Get the length right so you don't have too much.
Next - the engine is probably seized - so needs freeing up. You may be able to do this with the new cord, Otherwise - take the head off the cylinder and tap the piston down with a wooden drift while turning the crank.
Use a non-setting gasket sealant like hematite red to re-use the old gasket. Lawnmowers are quite resilient.

About 3 months ago whilst mowing lawn, the engine stopped.


Likely that the piston rod is snapped. I had a mower engine break down this way. To test it, slowly pull the starter cord and listen for any sounds. If you hear clunking, it is likely that the piston rod is broken (i.e. the engine is broken for good). If you don't hear any clunking, but hear the usual slow thwup thwup thwup of compression as the cylinder moves (sound will come primarily from the muffler, you may have a blown gasket in the engine, which is fixable, but only if you are mechanically inclined.
