Machine opeates for about 30 mins and then shuts down. It gets very hot and sounds like it is working hard. Not sure if it is a hardware issue (fan) or a software issue (something causing the peocessors to work to hard). Any suggestions?

Don't keep your pc indirect contact with warm/hot things ex. sun. Keep it in a room temp room, I know its summer and it gets hot now and then but try to keep it out of the sun.
If your knowledgable with laptops, open it up and clean it. Otherwise try a dust remover and blow out the dust from the fan exaughst areas.
Another thing you might want to get is a external fan for cooling. It looks like a flat board, with 1-2 fans, with a usb cable. It can be found in electronical / computer stores usually. Basically it draws on your laptop and blows air underneath it into your pc, your main pc exaughst blows it out the side/bottom. It keeps your pc a bit cooler.
As for software issue, depends on the program. The more powerful the program or multitasking it would draw up on alot of your laptops memory and hd. Try to limit your multitasking or program and build up see if that is the cause. If it is, you might need more ram so your laptop depends less on your hd to be the memory.
If you burn a lot of cd or DVD this to will cause it to over heat, it should have feet on the back of the laptop and raise the rear ones to give it more air circulation also buy a laptop table fan that will plug into a USB port to keep the fan cool, with today’s processors and thin notebooks it's hard to keep them cool when doing hard work on them
