Cannot reopen Sub-Zero 642 freezer door for 50 seconds

I cannot reopen the freezer door on our Sub-Zero 642 for a full 50+ seconds due to the vacuum seal. My Sub-Zero repairman said this is normal. Does anyone else have the same behavior?

No This is not normal at all. We learned the hard way by paying a sub-zero technician $200 to come out and fix it. What happens is that there is a small drain at the bottom of your fridge. Pull out the drawers at the bottom and you will see it. sometimes something small gets stuck down there and then you have this problem. All you have to do is fish a wire down there to dislodge whatever is blocking the drain. Took just a coupld of minutes to fix and voila your door will be back to normal operations again.

Yes, this is normal.  My 642 does the same thing. It seals to be more efficient while trying to cool back down after it has lost heat while open.

On your Sub-Zero 642 Your display will not work unless your refrigerator lights work.
1st. Make sure your light bulbs are good.
2nd. Check your refrigerator door light switch.
3rd. The subzero uses a thermal overload to kill your lights if the door is left open to long.

I have sub zero 642 and my techinician says that I need a ice make valve replacement. He says it costs $495, does that seem accurate?

Sub-Zero a hallowed name in refrigeration, and the 642 side-by-side refrigerator/freezer unit is a landmark Yeah, it's that impressive. Dual refrigeration uses two compressors and three evaporators, I can tell you to never expect less than $300 for calling anyone to your home!

I have a ten yr. old Sub Zero model 642. The

maybe a re-gas will last another ten years...if the leak is that small a re-gas will probably last it days out....ask the service man to re-gas it so the food does not spoil until you can save up for replacement...then just see how it goes.

My sub zero 642 just starting making a humming

It is your evaporator fan. When the door opens power is cut to the fan motor.

New 642 freezer door is very hard to open due to seal sticking

If the seal or seating area is sticky, wash it with warm water. If it isn't, this is just the sign of a good refrigerator. As the air cools, it becomes more dense and creates a vacuum inside the compartment. With a pliable new door seal which is sealing well, combined with a large door, this can cause a great seal with alot of pressure pulling on it. Smile, this is why your consumers bill will be much better with that new sub-z.

Vacuum condensor

open both the freezer and refrigerator doors, there are 4 screws at the top of the door frame that extend into the grill covering above the doors where the condenser is housed.  Remove all 4 screws, pull the grill open and then use your home vacuum to clean the dust from the condenser coil (it'll be obvious that it needs it).  Close the grill back, replace the screws and the message should go away.
