They all work to the same theme, here is a manual.
It's not a 'charging lead' as the unit has no battery. It is a Power Adapter that delivers 12 volts to run the HD Motor the same as if it was in a computer. You can get them on Amazon for around $15.
I purchased a SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx for my Vista machine and all was well. Then I purchased a Windows 7 machine. It would not recognize the devise. I contacted SimpleTech only to be told my model cannot be used on machines newer that the Vista. Recently I purchased a Windows 8.1, did a little research, plugged the SimpleTech into the 8.1 and reformatted it using the Windows feature. The SimpleTech is alive and well on my 8.1.
Try restoring you computer to a time when the device was working Start>All programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Restore Choose a date when you devices was working and you should be good
