Question about Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS 160 GB Hard Drive
Western Digital WD1600js stopped working. Ran DIAG504fcd.iso says no hard drive detected
It's possible the hard drive disks are not spinning, the power and data cables may need to be reseated. Otherwise, the drive is history.

THis The System Make a connecting noise? as it make when a usb devise is connected sucessfully?
if it does then:
1. leave the drive connected and restart the PC. and then disconnect and attach it again. and wait for a minute or so.
then see if it is been detected.
2. leave the drive connected and insert XP cd and boot the system. and when it shows partions to install XP can you see a Separete disk below showing [MBR] memory.
if it does then it means there is a problem with the windows and reinstall the windows, but 1st try reinstalling USB driver.

If you are using a pre-Windows xp system you may need to install specific drivers for your HD. If you run xp or Vista Try disconnecting completely the power cable from your computer for five minutes and then plug it back to the power and restart it. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes usb mass storage devices suffer troubles caused by electrostatic charges.

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.

One bad/faulty lead can cause a computer with lots of problems continually rebooting or failing to detect your drive
replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
hope this helps?
