On the Ps3 system, if i insert a ps3 game, movie or audio cd, the top right hand side load icon comes up then stops after 30 secs, no icon appears in the game, movie or music section of the xmb.
I then boot my ydl 6.1 linux, insert a dvd or cd and the same, a error msg comes up no media in drive.
I know the lens needs either cleaning or replacing but i don't wont to fork out on a blueray disc lens cleaner if it will not work and a replacement as to be done. The disc also ejects fine pressing the eject button on the ps3 console. Can anyone help as my funds are pretty low.

Re: Ps3 disc drive not working.
You've done everything I would have done honestly. Take a can of air and blow it into the drive to make sure dirt or dust isn't on the laser which could affect if it sees discs or not.
The better thing to try if you are good at opening up your ps3 and then removing your drive and opening that is to take a damp q-tip with a bit of glass cleaner and clean your laser in the drive gently. Then put the drive back together and hook the cables back up to the ps3. You can leave the cover to the ps3 off for this step. Turn on the ps3 and try different blu-ray, dvd's, music cd's, game discs, etc. If it still doesn't read any of them then either the laser or the drive i bad. If it reads some discs and not others then its a weak laser and the laser would need to be replaced.
If you have to replace the laser or the drive, you can do a search on Ebay and usually find them fairly cheap.
Hope this helps and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Make sure that you do not have the PS3 on it's side. Lay it flat. Insert a MOVIE DVD first and see if it will recognize the disc.
If you continue to hear a grinding sound when the ps3 is laying down that could only mean one thing, you need a replacement drive.
Dont forget to Always update your Playstation to the newest firmware.
Okay, what you are having is more then likely a bad dvd lens..
You said that you swapped the blue ray drive with another one. That wont work, there is a key and a difrent modal number on each drive. There are something like, A1,A2,A3 etc... The number is locatded on the top right hand connor on the bottom of the drive.
The number must HAVE to be the same to work in another ps3, so if you find one with the same number, and you are still are having the same problem, then send it off to sony.
But if it dose work then you know it is the dvd lens.
I do this every day, for a living. Hope it helps.

I have the same problem. My PS3 stopped reading any bluray discs. The spinning circle in the top right corner will come on for a few seconds when a disc is inserted, but then nothing. I found a work-around to get it to read discs though. You have to have a bluray disc in the drive (game or movie) and start a downloaded game or Playstation Home. Once the game or Home loads, hit the PS button on the controller. The crossbar menu will pull up and you will notice the disc icon will (magically) pop up. Click the quit game icon. Once you are out of the downloaded game or Home the disc icon will still be there. You can then load the game or disc. The icon will remain there until you eject the disc, so you will have to repeat this every time you want to load a game. Although this is a workaround to prevent Sony from gouging you for $150+, this is still not a fix. A fix would be for Sony to admit they have a money making firmware problem and fix it. This fix will only work if you don't have an actual hardware failure (which I apparently don't). I think a class action lawsuit is in order for everyone that has this problem and especially for those who have shelled out the money to fix something that is firmware related. I'm sure Sony will only fix the firmware to make this workaround not work anymore so as not to lose their little cash flow scheme.
your laser had stopped reading games and most likelybluray movies also sometimes they still read regular dvd's and music cd's sometimes non of then but I can guaranty is your laser you need to know what model you have because there is 2 different types of lasers for ps3 and you can install the laser your self or have someone do it for you we are a ps3 specialist we carry all major ps3 parts and accessories but if you can find somebody locally is better for you
Hi, I can help you but i need you to turn everything on and at that blank black screen insert any Disc wait like 2 seconds and tell me if the top right hand corner if theres a small loading icon looks something like a water drop ripple that pops up. If so i had the same exact problem, they way i fix mine is I replaced my HDD (2.5 SATA drive) which is located on the left side of the ps3 when layed down horizontally if you didnt know already. I went ahead and bought a new 2.5 SATA drive and replaced it with my old one that was causing the problem, most likely is caused buy corrupted data files. HOpe this helps
