Garmin 2610 freezes-up

On occasion, our 2610 appears to be suffering a seizure. The screen remains illuminated, but is unresponsive to commands. When this occurs, the unit changes into another mode from the normal, (where the North at the top left corner is straight up). I noted that once the unit responds to my touching the N icon in the upper left hand corner of the display, and the mode changes back to normal, (again where the N is straight up), the unit works properly. During the "seizure", I can hear the unit clicking and see the display jumping, as if it is trying to change. Sometimes the "seizure" lasts for several minutes. Case in point, yesterday I could not get the unit to function for over one half hour.

The same thing is going on with mine. A Garmin CS person thinks hardware failure. I will try the "brush" and see... Will let you know how this works out. but if dirt is causing the problem and it does seem as if something is pushing the screen! But it does not continue...... Comes and goes?

My 3.5 years old 2610 has similar problem. Cold start (after power off for 12 hours) without any problem. The issue shows up if I stop it for about half hour
to an hour (lunch break for example) and re-power it again.

The GPS enters into map browsing mode (with zoom in and zoom out signs
on the left). And it is shaking left and right like crazy. It does not respond to touch screen or remote control. Sometimes, it recovers in about 5 minutes.

On Black Friday (11/28/08), it didn't recover until 20 minutes later.

    So, I ordered a Nuvi 350 for $150 instead.

I will do a screen cleaning and have my fingers crossed.

yup, I got the same thing, screen freezes up and the display jitters and it finally went into this mode permanently while on a trip in the desert. no amount of cleaning helped.  I even took the unit apart to clean the screen from edge to edge and still the problem stays.  I'm going to threaten it with a soldering iron next ...... and/or use it as an underwater paperweight!

Regarding the screen jitter, believe it or not, the infrared port is causing the issue. If you disable it through settings inside the unit your issues will go away. The sun basically destroys the infrared sensor and the unit "thinks" a button on the remote is getting clicked continuously.

Check for dirt between touch screen and unit housing. Little grains of dirt or sand will get traped there and the unit thinks something is pushing on the screen.

I use the small brush tha comes with an elecric razor. Hold the unit so that the edge you're brushing is up, so that any matter will fall out instead of further in.

I have a Garmin 885 the sceen does not work. touch keys do not work. I cannot get past the Garmin start up when plugged in . when I unplug it I get the warning page and select ok and get pge with wheree ti...

I recommend attempting a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 885.
Then I would upgrade the system software to the latest version. This often brings back unresponsive Nuvis.

Perform the Hard Reset
  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  3. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  4. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot.
Upgrade the System Software

The upgrade software is a download available from Garmin. Installation steps are detailed here.

I hope that helps.

My garmin nuvi 670 touch screen is not calibrated

Have you tried using the screen calibration command? Press the Wrench symbol, then the Display symbol and then Calibrate screen. Press the dots as it tells you to and you should now have a calibrated touchscreen.

Screen froze up

"If your Quest locks up....on rare occasions, your Quest may freeze or lock up. In this case, reset the Quest by pressing the unit's Power key and the IN key at the same time. This will turn off your Quest. The unit will operate normally when you turn it on again."

Garmin 2610

Back up the unit then do a master reset.
Switch OFF, Press Page + Menu and turn on, holding the buttons for 5 seconds.
Then recalibrate. I did the recalibrate a few times before it was OK. If you use a stylus when the cross appears and hold it on the screen and move it to the corners you can see the error. Make a mental note and go halfway between the two if it does not calibrate at first go. Then when it calibrates, do it again. I recalibrate every now and again. I think it could be a firmware problem. I will try going from 4.8 to an old version

My GPS system is having seizures

The solution is listed on the garmin site but it is not clear
The problem is with the infra red remote reciever on the unit
Sometimes the sun acts like the remote is being pressed and that is when it shakes
the solution, and I hope you still have the unit cause there is nothing outthere like it.

Answer: from garmin site Normally this issue is caused by sunlight from certain angles hitting the Infrared (IR) port on the unit. This makes the unit react as if the remote control was communicating with it. This makes it switch in between screens just like if you were using the remote.
You can disable the remote IR port on your StreetPilot® 26xx unit by:

  1. Powering your unit ON
  2. Press the Menu button
  3. Touch Options
  4. Touch the General tab
  5. Press the Menu button
  6. Touch Disable remote

If you wish to use the remote again you can enable the remote IR port on your StreetPilot 26xx unit by:

  1. Powering your unit ON
  2. Press the Menu button
  3. Touch Options
  4. Touch the General tab
  5. Press the Menu button
  6. Touch Enable remote
