On occasion, our 2610 appears to be suffering a seizure. The screen remains illuminated, but is unresponsive to commands. When this occurs, the unit changes into another mode from the normal, (where the North at the top left corner is straight up). I noted that once the unit responds to my touching the N icon in the upper left hand corner of the display, and the mode changes back to normal, (again where the N is straight up), the unit works properly. During the "seizure", I can hear the unit clicking and see the display jumping, as if it is trying to change. Sometimes the "seizure" lasts for several minutes. Case in point, yesterday I could not get the unit to function for over one half hour.
Regarding the screen jitter, believe it or not, the infrared port is causing the issue. If you disable it through settings inside the unit your issues will go away. The sun basically destroys the infrared sensor and the unit "thinks" a button on the remote is getting clicked continuously.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

If the Touch Sceen is not responding properly, calibrate the touch screen.. Turn the Nuvi off then back on Slide Power key to the right (lock) Hold your finger on the secrren for 30 seconds until the calibration screen appears Follow the on-screen instructions
Have you tried using the screen calibration command? Press the Wrench symbol, then the Display symbol and then Calibrate screen. Press the dots as it tells you to and you should now have a calibrated touchscreen.
"If your Quest locks up....on rare occasions, your Quest may freeze or lock up. In this case, reset the Quest by pressing the unit's Power key and the IN key at the same time. This will turn off your Quest. The unit will operate normally when you turn it on again."
Back up the unit then do a master reset.
Switch OFF, Press Page + Menu and turn on, holding the buttons for 5 seconds.
Then recalibrate. I did the recalibrate a few times before it was OK. If you use a stylus when the cross appears and hold it on the screen and move it to the corners you can see the error. Make a mental note and go halfway between the two if it does not calibrate at first go. Then when it calibrates, do it again. I recalibrate every now and again. I think it could be a firmware problem. I will try going from 4.8 to an old version
The solution is listed on the garmin site but it is not clear
The problem is with the infra red remote reciever on the unit
Sometimes the sun acts like the remote is being pressed and that is when it shakes
the solution, and I hope you still have the unit cause there is nothing outthere like it.
Answer: from garmin site
Normally this issue is caused by sunlight from certain angles hitting the Infrared (IR) port on the unit. This makes the unit react as if the remote control was communicating with it. This makes it switch in between screens just like if you were using the remote. You can disable the remote IR port on your StreetPilot® 26xx unit by:
Powering your unit ON
Press the Menu button
Touch the General tab
Press the Menu button
Touch Disable remote
If you wish to use the remote again you can enable the remote IR port on your StreetPilot 26xx unit by:
