Re: Charging Garmin Nuvi battery for first time
The Garmin Nuvi 855 uses a Lithium-ion battery. It is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge.
In other words there is no memory effect with these batteries and it should be safe to charge it for as long as you like on the first charge. I would estimate 4 hours will give you a full charge if you wish to do this from the outset.

Nuvi 1350 charges in 4 to 8 hours. If your Nuvi is not accepting a charge, you may have a loose or bad USB cable. Note that the Nuvi can be charged with a phone charger. Charging it with a connection to a computer moves charging time toward 8 hours and more towards infinity if you don't have the driver installed on the computer. Turn the Garmin off. If the driver ins installed in the coputer, plug the Garmin into the computer and then hold down the power button on the Garmin for 30 seconds.
Hello There sill be a battery symbol in the forner of the screen which sill indicate advancing the charging signal [very like battery signal of a cellphone] in green color. You can see it on its manu page. To increase the accuracy of the battery guage, gully discharge the battery and then fully charge it. Do not unplug the Nuvi, until it is totally charged. Connect the vehicle power cable to the mini USB connector on your Nuvi and to a power outlet in your vehicle. The vehicle key may need to be turned ON/ACC for Nuvi to charge. Connect an AC adapter [optional accessory] to the nuvi and a wall outlet. Connect your Nuvi to a computer using a USB cable. The computer must be ON for the nuvi to charge. OK.
I updated my Nuvi 40 with the latest software and it will not reboot into GPS mode with the usb cable connected. It used to work. I have figured out how to get it to charge with a standard USB cable: 1) Power it on.2) Press the battery icon for 8 seconds - it will enter TEST mode.3) Plug in your USB cable from the PC to the Nuvi - the screen will change to say charging.4) Press the power button 3 times rapidly - it will say Charging across the screen and it will go dim and then dark.5) To wake it up and use GPS mode while charging simply press the power button 3 times rapidly, again. Works Great!
Merritt, Your Garmin Nuvi does not have a charging indicator similar to say your Cell ph. Simply a battery charge indicator scale. Normal full charge time is approximately 3 to 4 hr. If you looking to ensure your unit is in fact charging Plug in & then remove the connection, Your unit will pop-up a screen to request if you wish to remain on battery power. I hope this helps you.
The Nuvi units are short on battery life and therefore Garmin has given you a connector other then USB to power your unit while in a car. You need to carry that. It's just a design flaw. If you try to rely on the battery of your Garmin Nuvi, you have less than 2 hours even on a full charge. And carrying the USB adapter which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket won't allow your unit to run while charging. so you need to take the adapter charger bracket that comes with the unit if you need it for longer trips.
