I am unable to take a long (bulb) exposure at night. ISO set to 1600, F 5.6 (as fast as my lens gets) The Camera tries to focus but the shutter will not open

Set the focus to manual and then infinity. If you have the camera on auto focus at night there is not enough light contrast for the camera focus system to lock onto.

Getting Better Pictures From Your Nikon D90

I'm a professional PGA Photographer out here on the West Coast. I've been photographing for over 40 years. A few years ago, I bought a Nikon D90, after over 50,000 photos, I've came up with the conclusion that Manual Focus and Manual Shooting is the best. Program, A, S, Landscape, are all good, but, they are not consistence all the time. The same with Auto Focus, I can not tell you how many times I'd line up a photo of a Pro Golfer and my Auto Focus moves in and out of focus, and I miss the shot. So, now I use the Auto Focus to start and as soon as it's sharp, I reach over and turn my lever back to Manual for the shot and any refinement focus as well. Manual exposure is needed as well, as the Program modes will not be consistence from shot to shot. I meter the subject, take a test shot and change my setting manually. That way the exposure is the same. Hope this helps

I want to take panoromic view photo with d 90

Determine an appropriate exposure and lock it, either by using the Exposure-Lock function if you have the AE-L/AF-L button programmed that way, or by switching to Manual mode. Set the white balance to something other than Auto. Zoom and focus as desired, then switch off the autofocus. This is to ensure that the exposure, white balance, and focus do not change during the series of photographs.

With the camera on a tripod or other stable support, start taking pictures from one end of the scene to the other, overlapping one-third to one-half of the scene each time.

When you're done shooting, undo anything you did in the first paragraph so you won't be surprised by it the next time you shoot.

The photographs can be stitched together using any panorama stitching program, including Nikon's, Windows Photo Gallery, or Adobe Photoshop.

Hi.. i'm new to photography, and sometimes when im using my 55-200mm lens and shoot something near, i can't focus it.. what should i do with the settings?

The camera relies on detecting differences in contrast to perform the auto focus function. If there are only subtle differences in contrast (like those found in poorly lit subjects), the lens will "hunt" and fail to focus as expected.

The camera has a small lamp used to help the focus system by shining on the subject. Make sure it is enabled or otherwise not blocked or non-fuctioning. You could add more light, or switch to manual focus. Disable the the auto focus system either in the camera menu - or on the lens barrel itself - if equipped. . The former will let you switch back and forth the fastest - but if your lens lacks such a switch, you'll have to do it in the camera menu instead.

You can download your manual here to review it.

I hope this helps!

I cant get corect skin colour tone in auto white balance.i got some photographs and i see exif data of that photos in photoshop.at the exposure mode it showing manual exposure but at the scene cature type...

You can't. The Portrait mode, like all the other point&shoot modes, are automatic. The camera controls most functions, like exposure metering, auto-focus mode, and white-balance. If you want control over the camera, you'll have to use one of the PSAM modes.

Canon Digital Rebel XT auto focus

Auto Focus does not determine exposure. Only sharpness. "Wrong" exposure could be due to the metering mode being set in Spot Metering. Set it back to Evaluative Metering which may improve the overall even exposure of your shots. Test your shots in full auto or P mode. M (Manual) mode will require you to check the exposure setting manually (you can see the indicator in the viewfinder when you half-press the trigger)

It's making a clicking noise and will not turn off. Only removal of the batteries make it turn off.

A common cause of continuous clicking is a malfunctioning auto-focus system. Typically, the focusing mechanism is trying to obtain image focus, but is unable to because the positioner cannot move the lenses into proper position. A camera which has been dropped or subjected to physical shock may exhibit this symptom, or the auto-positioner may just need repair or replacement.
If the positioner is actually physically ok, you should be able to switch to the manual focus mode to overide the auto system, and then follow manual focusing procedures to allow capture of an acceptable picture. If not, the positioner system will probably need attention.
