Take an emory board or trim a piece of sandpaper so it is about 1/2" wide strip. Take the burner grate and plate (if applicable) off. There is a cover over the ceramic cylindrical spark unit. The spark is there but there is no connectivity to cause the arc to light the gas. This is due to grime and oils that accumulate over time on the bottom of this cover. Take your emory board or sandpaper and buff up the area that sits right on top of the spark unit. The roughing up actually cleans the area so your sparker can light the burners. Good luck.

The spark module should be behind the rear panel of the range, or behind the bottom drawer, mounted on the interior back wall. If you go to searspartsdirect.com, the part is listed as item number 22 under the "Gas Controls" heading. The part number is 74004283. Clean the burner with a wire brush around where the ignitor is. it needs a proper ground to ignite. When you turn the burner on do you hear a click click click? If so this should solve the problem.

Try cleaning the starter with rubbing alcohol and toothbrush. There might be soap or boiled over residue on the starter. If that doesn't work, try using fine 150 grit sandpaper and gentle clean the starter with it. This problems drove me nuts too. Good luck!

The nice grey-flecked surface coating is very thin; the solid black is underneath. You've "cleaned" the coating off -- that's why further scrubbing just makes it worse. We did the same thing :-(
