It could be that you have unistalled the USB drivers. You can reinstall the drivers from your computer manufacturers website.

You should be able to plug the external hard drive into the new computer and restore. Generally the drivers needed to access the external driver are on the external drive itself. The operating system will detect the hard drive (if it has plug-and-play services running). If the new computer fails to see the external drive, check the cable and download the driver manually from the manufacture's website. If the drive is recognized by the operating system, but you do not see a prompt to restore from the backup, you may need to locate a setup program on the external hard drive to start the restore process.

I have a broken Toshiba laptop, [the battery died]..and I have photos stored on it..is it possible to retrieve the photos?.. I also have a new Toshiba laptop...please help??

I don't think you lose data because battery is dead. Data is on your HD. Why don't you connect it to power supply and see if the old laptop is really working.

I got an old laptop and I bought a new toshiba laptop I just wanna ask how do I transfer my application and files from my old laptop to a new one using external hardrive, also wat external hardrive, and also...

Hi,
You can transfer the data files only from the old laptop to the new one. You cannot transfer the installed applications/software. Software are required to installed again on the new laptop afresh.
To transfer the data you can use external portable hard disk, which can be connected to the PC using any USB port (just like pen drive) and you can copy - paste the required data to the external disk just like you copy data from one partition to another. After copying the required data, you can connect the external drive to new laptop and copy the data to the new laptop. You can use external drive of any brand/ capacity. However, it is better to have an external drive with larger capacity, so that you can transfer the data in one go.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

hello

do this and it should work : unplug the power and USB cords from the external WD drive

wait 20 seconds. plug the power cord into the drive (make sure the other end is plugged into the wall)
wait 20 seconds, plug the one end of the USB into the computer, and the other end into the WD external drive.

in a few seconds, your computer should see and activate the WD external drive.

thanks for using FIXYA -- please make sure to send me 4 thumbs up

How do I transfer photos from an old HP Pavilion 6830 CPU to our new computer, a HP Pavilion a6750f?

easiest way would be to use a usb thumb drive. Better yest invest in an good external Hard drive - move all of your photo from old pc (use my computer - select folder and move) then connect the external hard drive to your new pc and "copy" to your new pc. when all done you even have a backup copy of your precious photos in external hard drive...

Computer is running very slow

Clear any and all unnecessary programs, files, documents, photo's and software from the computer.

You can place these items on several flash drives, or save yourself the hassle and buy an external hard drive.

As a general rule of thumb. Any programs or software you don't use everyday, should be on the external drive. Any photo's or old documents should also be on the external drive.

It sounds like your old laptop drive had 4 partitions on it.
If that is the case and you want it to be only one partition then you'll have to back up anything you want to keep in those partitions and reformat the drive as one partition.
You can reformat the drive using the Disk Management utility in Windows.

I want to be able to Mirror or RAID-1 on 2 different drives, then break the mirror and mark the second drive as an active boot drive. After looking around online, I realize that this process is more...

I understand now, and appreciate your taking the time to clarify.

1.Make a backup disk of the current harddrives contents. This is a Restoration Disk.
Has the basic needed files for the Windows O/S, (Repair), but will also allow for a Full Installation.

2.Desktop, not laptop:
Install two harddrives, put them in a RAID1 configuration. Forget about the 'mirror' image program. Leave them both in there in case of a harddrive failure.

3.Laptop, not desktop:

A.There are some laptops that you press a key, or certain keys, when installing a new harddrive, when the old one has hardware issues, or viruses render it unusable. These key/s are pressed, BEFORE the old harddrive is removed. Allows replacement of that harddrive.

There are some laptops that Do Not! There is a workaround.

The above is to replace that harddrive, and may be used to upgrade to a larger harddrive, IF, certain criteria is met.

B.Use an external enclosure, insert the new 2.5" harddrive. Connect the external enclosure to the laptop via the USB port.
Now use an image 'mirror' program such as DriveImage XML, (Free), to copy over the image of the old harddrive to the new one.

Insert the new harddrive into the laptop. You can use the old harddrive in the external enclosure as a Slave drive.
Still only allows THOSE harddrives, to be used on THAT laptop.
Don't be surprised if you have to Re-Activate the O/S on that harddrive. (New one)

C.RAID configuration on a laptop = No
You only have one interface connection for a harddrive, Generally.
IDE, or SATA
(Some gamer laptops use two hardrives internally. These are already configured in a RAID 0 configuration. More storage space. However, if one harddrive goes kaput, all information is lost. I do not believe you are referring to one of these)

http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm

The above is only for reference. I have no working knowledge of this program, just know of it's existence.

Installing old drive into new drive

If the problem is in the controller inside the case which in 99 percent of the times it is, This will certainly fix your problem. The MTBF(mean time between failure) of harddrives is 100,000 hours of operation. Also, any external case can be used that matches your hard drives specs...size, IDE, SATA ect...

Hope this helps you,
George
