Hello cdannyxd I have the same problem as you and the one thing I found out why it dose this is because:
1. The monitor is over heating.
2. The board it self has a faulty conductor.
3. Or your video card (or driver) is bad. But if it is your card you wont be about to see anything when you boot up.

Now I'm currently using the Dell E228WPF monitor (its ****) and I think its overheating. So what I did is (an its a temp fix) I opened up the monitors case and cut holes on it and the aluminum case so the board can be better ventilated and put a small fan behind it. .Once I save up to buy a acer 23inch (HDMI) I'm going to take this monitor and smash it OFFICE SPACE STYLE!!!! Good luck.

Sounds like a bad video card. It's just circumstantial that it goes off intermittently. I would also update or re-install the video drivers. Especially if you get a clean post screen. That's a good pre boot test for the monitor. Also check all the drivers for the board & make sure they're up to date.

Check all the pins on the VGA cable, also try it on another PC to make sure it is not the PC that is causing the problem. Hopefully it will not be bad lamps.

I am having trouble with the monitor showing a black screen. It will turn off in the middle of anything I am doing, quite randomly. Using windows XP Home edition. PC does not turn off, but disk light...

I would suggest to first determine that your monitor is OK. If you are using a notebook try connecting an external monitor as well and see if the same random (monitor switching off problem) happens with this monitor. If you have a desktop try connecting a different monitor.

If the same condition happens with a different monitor try updating the drivers for your video card.

I just purchased a new game, Spore and it wont play

Try installing the video card driver from here. It will at least give you the latest driver version. As far as the monitor does it turn itself off after being left unused for a while or randomly play up?
Have a look at the power settings in control panel and where it says monitor tell it to never turn off.

did the monitor turn off when it is in idle mode? it might be the monitor power options (it might have been set that when it is idle for an X minutes it will turn off). check the monitor power settings.

Unplug the monitor from CPU Keep the monitor alone and see any problem. If not try to plug to some laptop and check again. We want to sort out the problem from monitor or CPU..

It sounds like an issue with the power button board and I would certainly make use of the warranty option.
