Get new strong batteries..... turn the camera back on and smack it HARD with the palm of your hand. It's the ONLY thing that has worked for me. When you get home take it to the shop. For some reason smacking it dislodges it from the locked open position.
It just worked for me... hope this helps!!!

Got a lens error message and the camera turned off

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Of course! You mentioned the beach so maybe salty water or sand got inside the camera. (Salt can interfere with the electrical connections inside the camera and possibly short-circuit.) Send it back for repair to replace any damaged parts you may need. They'll send it back good as new :)

E 18 problem

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.
