What you are referring to is called the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD). This indicates a general hardware failure normally due to overheating. When these PS3's were produced Sony decided to use lead free solder. The problem with lead free solder is that it is not as flexible as leaded solder but it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly. When the console gets hot and cools down hairline cracks appear within these solder joints and a good electrical contact cannot be made. This then causes the console to fail. It could be on a number of different components including the CPU, GPU or memory. There is a temporary cure that may or may not work but ultimately the console will need to be repaired professionally or replaced. As it is out of warranty Sony will not replace it but will offer a refurbished unit for around £130. If you look on Youtube for Yellow light of death fix there is a way that you can re-heat the solder joints using a heat gun but if you are not confident taking apart electrical items then this really may not be something you want to try.

I am sorry I cant give you any better news but unfortunately it is a very common problem with the PS3.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

I'm afraid you have gotten the Yellow Light of Death ( YLOD ) you will need to have your PS3 repaired by a technician or you can Google YLOD and you will find a repair guide.

My ps3 green light comes on stays on maybe 15 sec then turns back to red, with no yellow light in between

PS3 owners refer to this as the 'Red Light of Death' or 'RLOD'. It's quite common. The problem is caused by poor solder joints (due to overheating) on the motherboard and degrading heat sink compound on the fan.

This is a processor error. There is no way to get to the restore screen when you have the yellow light issue. Try CPR in NYC. They usually have a 1-3 day turnaround time, and are pretty cost effective. You can easily ship them your unit. They are faster and cheaper than Sony!

The ps3 turns on but then the little light comes on and blincks yellow but then goes back to red

Your console has over heated, and the heat has caused some solder joints under the processor to warp / become 'dry joints' We offer this repair service and it is fully garanteed. FixMyConsole
