Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

Ice built up in the freezer compartment

My Refrigerator - Whirpool ED22RFXFW - has the optional automatic ice maker which is working fine. I found ice built up around the ice bin. I cleaned it and removed the ice bin.

The following day when I wanted to replace the ice bin back, I found ice built up on the interior side of the back wall surrounding the mechanism that engaged the auger of the ice bin. I noticed also ice built up on the upper part of interior side of the freezer door.

Please help me to find out what's the problem? What part(s) need to be replaced? Where to buy the part(s)?

Thank you,
Iwan

    Hi Sea,

I called my Home Warranty Insurance company and they sent an appliances repaired contractor. The contractor's finding was air entering freezer compartment thru the ice dispenser because the dispenser had been broken. It would costs me $225.00 (Mat. & Lab) to replace the ice dispenser (Note this repair is not covered by the Home Warranty). Is it a reasonable price?

We have a possible defrost problem or the seal around your doors are pulling moist air air inside. I believe now would be a good time to unplug the refrigerator and check the coils and defrost system. Inside the fresh food compartment you have a defrost timer that I want you to turn clockwise slowly until the compressor stops. Leave it there for about 25 minutes until refrigerator either restarts or don't if it does not then turn it a little more until it starts. The part number for the timer is 482493 Also below is a picture and #6 is the defrost timer. It should be reachable through a small hole in the bottom of the control panel. If everythig is well there we will check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. After you check these things let me know the results. Sea Breeze

Considering the cost of someone coming out and finding the problem and replacing your ice maker I would consider the charges fair. I only wish I was able to help you. The replacement for your model is part number 4317943 found through my website.

Repair to the dispenser is complex and not for the average homeowner to attempt to to repair.

Ice maker flooded top freezer compartment

It may be just the water control valve on back of refrigerator. Put tap water in ice maker and lower lever for on. After ice is made, does it drop to tray? At this time when empty is the time the control valve is asked for water. The problem could be in valve on back or the inside ice maker itself. If you can try a few test with me I will help you locate the problem. Let me know what you find as I go through this with you. Sea Breeze

Not enough model to get the wire diagram. It sounds like a diode is out in the water valve harness. If it is using the triple valve on that unit.

Kenmore side by side ice maker

Hello,
There are as you can imagine many possible causes for you no ice condition. I will give you the most common problem for the year model you have. I hope this helps you.
You will need to remove the ice maker from the freezer compartment to check it. Once it is repaired if the following information does help, and you reinstall the ice maker, it should go through a cycle automatically within an hour of your reinstalling it in the freezer compartment.
Once you have the ice maker out of the freezer compartment you will need to remove the white cover on the end of the ice maker and look at the center of the large white gear. If the part inside the hole in the center of the gear is broken or looks twisted, you will need to replaced the module. The module is the part that has the large white gear and is held in the ice maker by 3 phillips head screws. It only comes as an assembly. You can't get just the little broken piece.
