Black streak on scanned printed copies

On my Brother DCP-7040, when using flatbed or auto feeder to scan the copies come out with large black streak down middle. Any suggestions?

Hi

Open your scanner lid and make sure their is no dirty marks sitting on your scanner glass. Also does this happen on the scanner glass or when using the ADF? If its on the ADF its most likely that the glass is dirty and needs to be cleaned. Black streak on scanned printed copies - 6c66c542-b5d2-4d0a-8a21-00c054973a29.png

Testimonial: "Thank you for getting back and for the pic (very helpful). It only happens when scanning both from ADF and Flatbed. When printing it is fine. So is it still probably the glass needs to be cleaned."

  • Heinrich Roux Apr 30, 2014

Yes you can try cleaning it, but it sounds more likely that the scanner self is giving the issue seeing that it makes marks on both flatbed and ADF.

Can the scanner itself be fixed?

There are 3 possible issues here:

1. You may have to clean the glass, both sides maybe, & it requires a technician to do it. If you're not scanning or copying, just printing & it still has a black streak on printouts, you may;

2. have a bad drum, you need to replace it with brand new toner cartridge. If it has some burnt "film-like" debris;

3. you may have a damaged fuser-film. You may have to replace it.

Testimonial: "Does not do it when printing. Only does it when scanning from ADF and Flatbed. Do you think it is glass that needs to be cleaned?"

SOURCE: HP LaserJet 2840 Scanner problem

Yes, but I don't see any actual paper jams. I have a Vista O/S and I've been reading that that might be the problem; the 2840 scanner driver is not compatible with the Vista O/S and HP hasn't produced a solution yet. I appreciate your efforts, thanks.

SOURCE: HP Officejet 6300 All-in-one machine makes black streaks

The problem is that that there a small piece of glass that the doc feeder use's to scan the orginal. You will have to clean the small glass it's about a half of a inch piece and is normally under the doc feeder unit. It will either be to the right side of the main copy board glass or it is under the doc feed unit where the paper goes down through the feeder. It is mostly some white out on the glass, just clean with a dam cloth with water or windex..... Good Luck

SOURCE: Black line down the middle of scanned documents.

Try leaving the cover open and run a test scan, once with a fresh sheet as the item to be scanned and then a second time without anything on the table.  You may see what is blocking the light source or possibly a defect in it.
Scanning is done left-right, left-right across the width of the page and the vertical stripe indicates that the blockage is present during each scanned line.
In servicing copiers and multifunction machines, I have found a number of curious contaminents, one of the most annoying was a moth, still alive, that would randomly sit on the lamp, causing some pages to come out OK, others not.
If your copies and printouts are coming out fine, then only the scanner can be at fault.

SOURCE: vertical black line in scan document not in copies through document feeder

Lift the lid and to the left of the main glass is a smaller glass; that is what scans during the feeding process. Make sure that it is completely clean; even a speck of dust can cause a line to appear. I took a lens wipe and cleaned mine and my line was gone.

Copy Output all black

Janson; does this problem only occur if you're doing copying via the auto feeder, or also if you lay the paper in manually? The auto feeder uses a small glass opening to the front (or left) of the main flatbed scan area; if there is an issue with that area letting in light, an all black page would result. If you get all black with either type of scan, but regular printing still works, then you may have a dead scan element. Try scanning something to your computer or to an email account to see if normal scanning still works.

Scan streaks with HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw

This may not always be the solution, but in my case it was. If you are getting black streaks on your copies, try this first:

The problem is that that there a small piece of glass that the doc feeder use's to scan the original. You will have to clean the small glass it's about a half of a inch piece and is normally under the doc feeder unit. It will either be to the right side of the main copy board glass or it is under the doc feed unit where the paper goes down through the feeder. It is mostly some white out or other residue, on the glass, just clean with a monitor wipe or take a cloth & wipe, etc...... Good Luck

When I feed copies thru top feeder a black lines appears down one side of paper

Hello,

This type of problem is usually caused by something like white out or lint stuck to the scanner glass. Open the top of the scanner and clean all of the glass surfaces with window cleaner sprayed on a paper towel ( do not spray on the glass) , allow it to dry and then try to scan. Here is a link to some pictures that show what to clean.

My brother MFC 8500 is receiving alright but everything I send out has a big black streak going down the right side of the page. Confirmation page also has big black streak.

Let me see if I got this right.

The received fax is clean but when you send one out it has a black streak on it.
Cool! So far so good.
Makes sense because for sending, the fax scans the original document and parts of the scanning area could be dirty and so on. Therefore a black streak may appear.
The same black streak would also appear when you make a copy, because the original document must also be scanned.
Logical!

However for receiving faxes, the machine uses the internal memory and the print engine only, and the same applies to printing the transaction report, which comes from inside via the print engine.
The scanner has no rol in either situation.

Now I'm lost!

Black vertical lines in copies

You need to clean the glass. Open up the feeder and you have a large piece of glass for scanning and to the left a smaller piece of glass that it uses to scan from the feeder. Clean this smaller piece of glass; even the slightest smudge can leave a black streak.

I have a BROTHER MFC- 8860DN that makes black streaks on copies

If this is only happening with copies and not straight prints, it is possible that the problem is with the scanning unit. Use the soft cloth to clean the scanner area to the left side of the machine where pages are scanned when run through the page feeder. A spec of dust or other debris in this area will appear as a streak along the length of the page.

If it occurs on all prints, You may need to replace the drum or clean the fuser unit.

Black vertical lines on faxes sent using auto document feeder

If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.

Black streaks are appearing on printed page when scanning

Do the lines only show up if you use the document feeder? If so, there is something on the strip of glass where the page is scanned. Open the top to reveal the large glass area. Then open the part where the paper feeds in when using the document feeder. It will flip open from right to left. There are two pieces to this, so make sure you grasp it as low as possible. You should see a small strip of glass. Clean all the glass with a SOFT cloth. Don't spray any cleaner onto the glass, rather, spray it onto the cloth if you need any.

Good luck!

Print Problem - vertical lines

If the problem only occurs when using the document feeder, the problem is not usually caused by the drum. When using the document feeder, try to notice where the scanner (the light assembly under your scan glass)stops just before the paper is being fed. Some multifunction machines have a small piece of glass that is separate from the large scan glass and the scanner assembly stays parked underneith it as the original is being fed over it. Most likely there is something on the glass where the scanner parks as originals are being fed thru the feeder. When putting your original on the large scan glass to copy, the mark on the glass will only show as a spot, but will show as a vertical line thru the whole copy when using the feeder.
