I can't erase my Maxtor OneTouch III

I'm running a Mac OS X 10.5.7. How do I return my external Maxtor OneTouch III 400/USB 2.0 back to Windows so I can reformat the Maxtor to backup my Mac?
I am going to be using SuperDuper! to make a bootable backup clone. I want to erase everything that is on my Maxtor, then make a clean backup and schedule future backups with SuperDuper!
Thanks, pulletstudio

How to format. First, go to the Maxtor support site and find the software package for Mac for the OneTouch4. It's called OneTouch 4 Lite. HereI can't erase my Maxtor OneTouch III - t.gif
(UPDATE) Here is the linkt.gif for the Plus version.

Now unzip this folder of about 200MB, and you will see a bunch of Windows stuff and a Mac application called Mac OneTouch 4 and a disk image called OneTouch 4.dmg.

If you have messed up your OneTouch, you can use disk utility to format it as MS-DOS for now and mount it. Once it is mounted, drag the Mac OneTouch 4 app and the OneTouch 4 DMG to your attached OneTouch III drive. Now launch the Mac OneTouch 4 application from your new drive.

It will run an applescript, mount the disk image and format your drive you as a Macintosh Extended Journaled one. Now, when you launch disk utility, you can reformat any way you want, including MS-DOS or Macintosh.

Now throw out all that Maxtor software. If you want to clone a drive, I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner. You can also use Apples new Time Machine software. Leave the one button stuff alone.

Just to clarify, do you mean you need to connect the drive on a Windows machine so you can format it there, and then bring it back to your Mac to use it for backups?

If so, I'm quite sure there must be a way to have it formatted in Mac without the need to take it over to a Windows machine.

If you must do this in Windows, connect the Maxtor to a Windows machine, go to Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management. You'll see your Maxtor in the list. Right-click it and choose Format.

Sorry if I've misunderstood your question, if so, kindly clarify for me, I would like to help.

Best regards

First I will want you to know that support for win98 has long reached end of life. I don't think that win98 support mass storage unit of that capacity. I will suggest you opgrade your os to winXP

Vista Home Premuim Use with Maxtor onetouch

Software downloads are available from the Seagate support site. Here is a link to the download page for Maxtor OneTouch III family. It should provide the latest version of all software that came with the new unit, including "Updated software to run in Windows Vista. Also can be used in case the original software that was preloaded on the drive has been erased."

Hope it helps!

From apple to windows

You did not mention which Windows or Mac version you are running, but "in the good old days", all I did was to format the drive either as FAT32 (in Windows) or as MS-DOS (in Mac).
Keep volume/folder file names following Windows naming rules.
Don't erase any of the invisible files that will be visible on the opposite system when running. MP3's will write/read fine for both OS.

Re-partition external HD for windows and mac

Back up all the data on the disk to your Mac. Plug the disk into your Windows computer and format it with a FAT32 filesystem. Both Mac and Windows can use FAT32. Do not format as NTFS.

Most of the time when you get error messages like this it is due too drivers. Now in order to determine this issue I need to know what type of computer you have, OS installed on it, how old the PC etc. Please advise!
