Question about Rheem Tankless Hot Water Heater Rtg-74pvp-2 7.4 Gpm

Rheem Tankless water heater drain valve constantly leaks water. I've had the heater roughly 5 months and this just started a couple of weeks ago. It started leaking slowly at first but now it is a full flow in the small drain valve.

I have the plastic tubing that came with it installed on the unit and running outside the house. It just constantly blows water out of it. Luckily it is going out the house and not inside; however, I'm sure it's not suppose to constantly leak. Is this the part you are referring to?

  • Gary Morrow Jun 21, 2009

This is the unit I have:

    http://www.rheemtankless.com/content/res...

On page 18 it shows the relief valve of which I speak and the tubing is connected exactly like in the diagram. Everything is.

I am sure the installation was done correctly and no parts are missing because as I stated the unit worked fine for 5+ months. This is a new development and has not always occured. If the unit were not properly installed or parts missing then it would have done this since the beginning and it has not...

  • Gary Morrow Jun 21, 2009

I replaced the pressure relief valve and I am still experiencing the same issue. As soon as I turn the water supply on it starts draining out the Drain valve? It's not suppose to drain out the drain valve all the time!

  • Gary Morrow Jun 21, 2009

I agree with your assessment, and I've checked the small little Drain valve. I'm just not sure if that whole part is faulty or what?

There is a small rubber gasket and it is still perfectly sound with no wear or tear apparent.

  • Gary Morrow Jun 21, 2009

Can you tell me where you purchased the new part? I'll give you 4 huge hands if you do!!!!

  • Gary Morrow Jun 21, 2009

I'll head to Home Depot tomorrow and hope from there.

I'm not a plumber, but valves have rubber gasket in order for water not to leak or float to control the flow of water.as long as no cracks or anything like that on the tubes/valves that may be the cause.because like you said earlier it working well when it was installed.

Disassemble valve and ensure proper installation...your installation looks like the one in the diagram but you are not sure if no part is missed or placed properly...make sure rubber stoppers and fitted properly..

The condensate line is not hooked up,,, you will see on the side of the vent a little rubber cap, take it off and contect a line to it and let it drain, also you should have no mre then 65lbs of pressure going into the unit to much pressure will make it blow off

Access your product manual.
I cannot find a product manual.
Some major company, like Rheem, makes this computer that heats water.

Call service technician to repair the unit.
Copy following link for overview of type of problems found with tankless computers.
For example tankless computers require continual maintenance on yearly and monthly basis to prolong expected life of product.

If tankless computer is older than 5 years, then assume it is like your 5-year old laptop computer.

http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Tankless-maintenance.pdf

Clean the water filter as shown in product manual.
Error E1 is not specifically shown for Rheem/Pronto tankless.
1 is usually related to water flow.
E errors are related to temperature, so E1 can be temperature sensor failure on hot water pipe.
E errors can be loose/bad wiring or part failure.

Error codes are considered start-point for troubleshoot.
Each tankless manual recommends cleaning the water filter monthly, deliming heat exchanger yearly, and cleaning combustion chamber and burner parts yearly.
Regular maintenance can prevent most common error codes, but the cost and nuisance will outweigh expected $1-8 monthly savings on gas bill.
The requirement for continual maintenance should signal folks that tankless are not effortless hot water as described in tankless promotion.

Solve most tankless problems same day, yourself, any brand, using minimal tools for about $350.

Error code C7 13

Before calling service technician, open following links for troubleshoot resources including Rheem chat, and Rheem contact, and possible product manual:

C7 13 might be bad flow control valve.
While the tankless is down, I suggest also catching up on general maintenance such as cleaning the combustion chamber and burner parts, checking vent drain line, and cleaning water filter, and de-liming the heat exchanger.

Installed a tankless gas hot water heater a few months ago, and ever since then when ever I turn on the hotwater, I get pockets of air coming out of the faucet. There are no leaks in the water lines, but...

1) Never, ever install tankless water heater, unless your wallet is 2" thick and you enjoy nuisance problems and recommended continual maintenance.
2) Add in-line air vent.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Air-vent-added-to-return-22.jpg
3) Look for check valve along the line. Look for mixing valve, pressure regulating valve, etc.
4) If you have recirculation system, remove cross-over check valve and see if problem is located there.
5) Contact Rheem. 800-432-8373 They will want model number, serial number, and name of installer. And might recommend contacting installer or plumber.
6) Increase water flow. Check water flow requirement of tankless (.5 gallons per minute activation) with actual flow at faucet.
7) Clean water filter at tankless unit.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Tankless-maintenance.pdf
8) Crossover at single-handled faucet.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Crossover.html
9) Fix all leaking faucets indoor and outdoor so no air is being sucked in.
10) Bad TP valve on water heater sucking in air each time water pressure pulls on the valve?

High water pressure might be causing problem.
Use Brady BTG-100 pressure gauge to check pressure on nearby spigot.
Add a pressure reducing valve on incoming water line.

Water heaters, tankless and tank-type are damaged by high water pressure 80 psi.
House plumbing fixtures also have shortened lifespan.
