Question about IBM ThinkPad A31 Notebook

1 Answer

Lost wireless in IBM Thinkpad A31 2652. Did a HD format and clean install of XP HE. The wireless hardware no longer shows up. I have 3 yellow question marks under network adapters under hardware devices. Is this a "simple" matter of downloading the driver for the wireless inboard device?

Thanks Wiz....BUT, since I can only see the yellow question marks, I'm not sure what the WAN device is? Any ideas? Nothing under hardware devices relates to WAN or Wireless. But, as I said, it was there and working great prior to the clean install of XP. I assume the HD fromat errased the files, and XP didn't reinstall them.

Well, Maybe your driver is not installed. With windows XP

1. Right click "my computer"

2. click properties

3. click hardware

4 click device manager.

see if there are any big yellow question marks, if so you need to load drivers.

Problems to configue network controller in IBM T42

There are several different LAN, wireless, & modem devices that are installed on the T40 series laptops. For example, if one of the network driver or modem driver doesn't work then install a different one. Make sure you download all the various device drivers for your model laptop and the XP version of those driver.

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP device drivers for your model laptop,
Use this link :-

Lost wireless - Ibm thinkpad r40

haha worrying isnt it...
after reinstallation of windows no drivers for blutooth , wireless quite often modem and same vga,
windows by default does not install because need specific software ...(drivers)
what you need to do is first of all find out what wifi it is ; like wlan400 e.g.
you then need to download and install the driver for it .as soon as the driver is present windows will detect and install device,
look in device manager for devices with no drivers intalled.
same precedure for each device.

Thinkpad r40 - wireless disappeared

Go to the control panel, then System, then Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Then Network adapters - you should have two network adapters one LAN and one wireless.
If most likely have one, the LAN adapter and a yellow ? against a network adapter - this will be a wireless adapter (its not installed)

Check your BIOS and make sure the wireless card is enabled.
You need to download from the IBM/Lenove WEB site the wireless driver (there may be several types that is installed for your model laptop). Make sure you select the correct Windows version driver.
When you run the driver,it will uncompress and copy to your hard drive in C:\drivers. You can then install the driver from this directory. If it doesn't work then repeat with another driver, most likely one that works will be the Intel one.
