Question about Toshiba Satellite A60 Notebook

1 Answer

My Toshiba Satellite A105 will not turn on. The hard drive is making a clicking noise when the ac adapter is plugged in. I tried what Johnny6600 and the other post said to do to try to fix the problem and it still doesn't turn on. Help.....is the laptop dead?

A clicking sound from the hard drive is a sign of death.
I would try another hard drive and reinstall the O/S

Toshiba satellite a105 clicking noise near power supply

When you say that the hard drive works I have to ask how you know. There are not many parts in a laptop that would make a clicking noise. One of them is the hard drive. Is there any display activity at all? Lights on the unit that come on?

Systems: Toshiba A100/A105 laptops

Note: the Toshiba support site recommends strongly a BIOS update:

BIOS update for Satellite A100/A105, Satellite M110/M115, and Tecra A7Posted on: 04/10/2007

In very rare cases, the battery pack of your PC may stop accepting a charge, i.e., the battery stops working and no longer supplies power to the computer. To minimize the risk of ever experiencing this problem, we strongly recommend that you download and install the latest BIOS by clicking the 'Downloads' link that will appear when you are finished reading Support News.

My Toshiba wont turn on. I tried holding the power

Hi there, Your ac adapter is damaged & that's why power does not transfer in your notebook. The capacitor of adapter is burned & that's why the noise started. Thanks & waiting for your feedback.

Unable to start the computer. power button will light up for a second but no fans or other noises and then the light goes off

i would say try replacing the battery or the ac adapter. I had the same exact problem on my toshiba a105-s171. my battery was dead because the ac adapter failed to charge. Replaced the adapter and it works now.

There's not much you can do. The problem is definately with your motherboard. I'd recommend a bios update, but normally you can ONLY run a bios update if the battery and the ac are both plugged in.

This problem is pretty common among Toshiba's A105 and P105 models.

Besides replacing the motherboard there's not much you can do.

Sorry.

No, no need for hard drive. Press and hold the FN key and press F4 once, if nothing happens try it again. If screen appears then your in luck. Otherwise the back light needs to be replaced for your LCD screen. Try an external screen and press FN+F4 key and you should have a screen so you can see if there are other problems. Good luck!

When you turn it on, do you hear any activity? Motors start working, fan spinning, etc…? Try to connect an external monitor and start the laptop. Check if you can get any video on the external monitor. If the external monitor is dead too, try to remove the battery and start the laptop from the AC adapter. It also might be a bad memory module or a bad connection between the memory and the motherboard. Try to reseat the memory module, move it to the second slot. If you have two memory modules, try to remove them one by one and turn on the laptop. Also, try to remove the hard drive and see if you can boot it to Toshiba screen without the hard drive installed.

There is no special button to reseat the BIOS settings. To do it, you’ll have to access the BIOS using F2 button on the laptop start up, but as you have no video, you cannot access the BIOS and set it to defaults.
