New car head unit, same old problem: Garbled sound

Left speaker gives out garbled sound intermitently ("crumpled paper" sound). Just had new head unit installed. Stereo installer thought the new HU would solve the problem. Seemed ok, then as soon as the road isn't smooth, old crumpled. Installer also said speakers are in good shape.

I had this unit installed as a present. I know that this problem existed with the old HU. The owner tried to fix previously without luck...but they didn't have the tools I notice your other mentioning (testers, etc.).

I don't know anything about car audio, so I guess I'm looking for the right questions to ask the installer.

The easiest thing to have done is to re-wire the left speaker. Are the speakers original equipment? if so, are they amplified? The door grill over the speaker would say "bose" or "infinity" or "JBL" etc. If the speakers are factory, replace them with an efficient pair of aftermarket speakers and have the wiring replaced. Hope this helps

Hello susanmillan,

If it's not the head unit, and it's not the speaker, then it must be a problem with the wire going to the speaker. When you hit a bump, the wire shorts or opens intermittently causing the faulty sound. Some insulation could have rubbed off. There could be a bad pin in a connector. The wire could have some broken strands. It could have become pinched against something sharp.

The good news is, it's really an easy fix. Just have your installer make sure that the sound is OK at the wiring harness itself, and run a new wire from there to the speaker.

Hope this helps.

55 inch toshiba led tv audio sometimes gets garbled. must turn set off and on to correct

I have a Samsung 55 inch plasma that has experienced intermitent garbled audio, sometimes very frequent (a couple of minutes between episodes) and long in duration (several minutes). Switching to another channel and back would correct the audio.

I ran the auto program channel function a couple of times and it eliminated the gabled audio problem, except for infrequent (once every hour or two) and very short (a second or two in duration) episodes of gabled audio.

I found a thread on a CNET forum on this subject and it seems that the garbled audio problem affects a number of Samsung flat panel models.

How is the other sound? Like MP3 sound? Is it garbled there? Try using headphones. If the sound is good there, then your internal speaker is bad.

Garbled sound

Your Codec is damaged. Reload your drivers for your sound card. First uninstall the old ones. Moving your non working speakers and they play fine says they are good. I have a problem that you have new speakers and the problem went away. Drivers do not care what speakers are on the other end. It only produces output. Now that your second pair is working correctly, put back the Harmons and see if the problem comes back
