My mower will only engage when setting still or going in reverse....could it be a short or a bad relay switch?

Why does my oto shut off when engaged and motor shuts off but motor will keep running if pto is turned off

You have a bad safety somewhere, heres a few places to check, your seat switch if thats bad it thinks theres no one on the the mower and it wont let you cut grass, reverse switch some mowers wont let you cut in reverse in case kids are around, brake switch which should be working since your able to turn on the mower, check your pto switch as well could be bad but my guess is the seat switch let us what you find

Lights come on, but why doesn't it turn over?

#1 Your starter relay or key switch is bad.To test-use a meter OR use a jumper cable for hot(red) post on starter to positive post on battery. Motor jumps whats not switching? #2 There are several safety switches. Check following,seat,brake pedal position,gear leaver(forward-neutral-reverse),blade engagement,clutch. One of the switches are wiring to them is open or shorted. Visually check the wiring connections. Have a nice day.

It starts and runs but when when I put the cutting in gear it dies. It's supposed to do this if the mower is in reverse but now it does it when going forward.

Does your mower have a safety reverse mowing switch built in on your key switch? If so it must be set to allow reversing while the blades are will shut it down if not set to the proper position..if it does not have one..most likely you have a bad seat safety switch..try TEMPORARY bypassing it with a jumper wire..if it works the switch needs replaced.. Cub Cadet 2166 series. Mower will not engage.

Unfortunately, the circuit is a little complicated - it involves the "PTO switch" (the switch you pull on to engage the mower), a "reverse switch" that senses if you've put the mower in reverse, and a relay operated by the reverse switch. The reverse switch is there to disengage the blades if you try to reverse while mowing. A failure in any of those items, or the connectors and wiring between them, will prevent the blades from engaging. Unless you want to "shotgun it" and replace parts one-by-one on a guess (which many repairmen to do save time, but at your expense) you need to use an ohmmeter or test light to trace and isolate where the failure is.

My craftsman mower shuts off every time the blades are engaged. What is the problem?

you most likely have a shorted or open safety switch. you did not mention year or model # so I can only guess what configuration you have, but typically there are the following safety switches on a riding lawn mower: clutch/brake on switch (under floorboard at clutch, this allows you to get off the tractor with engine running if brake is applied), Reverse gear safety switch (will shut engine off if attempting to go in reverse with blades on...follow the gear handle rod down to transmission, may be internal or external of differential), there is also usually a disable switch to allow blade operation in Reverse and this is usually relay operated via a button or turn of the key position, Seat safety switch (under seat and usually is disabled via engaging the clutch/brake switch, this switch will kill the motor if you come off of the seat unless brake is applied), and of course a switch that is tied in to tell when blades are engaged (engage handle or PTO switch). It is actually simpler than it sounds and you dont' need to be an electrician to figure it out. start out with a visual inspection of the switches that you can see. I would suspect the transmission position (reverse) switch first, do you have an override? if so, turn it on and see if engine stays running with blades engaged. hope this helps and here is a link to a company that deals mower parts and has alot of great parts breakdown illustrations online. A craftsman is pretty much the same as a MTD or White Outdoor model, so look those up and it will show you the areas where switches are.

Engine shuts down when pedal is released, and when pto is ingaged

check your Reverse Gear engage switch and PTO (blades engaged switch), either a bad switch(es) or short in wiring indicating that you are in Reverse with the blades engaged. Is there an override function so that you can mow in reverse? Check that circuit vs. the PTO and reverse gear. good luck

Sounds like a bad safety switch and since it is caused by both the blade and the transmission, I would check the seat switch. You can temporarily bypass it using a short jumper wire on the harness plug, unplug it from the seat switch, put the jumper wire across both contacts in the plug and see if it solves your problem. If it does, replace the switch

I'm not sure on a vacuum switch, but if this is a lawn tractor, most all come with a safety switch on the seat & reverse lever. If the mower is placed in reverse or the weight is removed from the seat it will kill the power to the electric clutch (opens the circuit). A faulty safety switch may be your problem. You'll need a multi-meter & some patience to find the problem

5500 FS craftsman tractor electical cutout switch problem

A jumper wire (insulated) can be TEMPORARILY connected across each switch (assuming it has two wires) to short out the switch (completes the circuit), one switch at a time. Then try to start the mower, and if it starts and runs, you have just found your bad switch.
I do not advise using the mower until you get the switch replaced . . . the safety switches exist for your protection.
