Check for a blown fuse in the starting circuit and check all the safety switches there will be one under the drivers seat. Is your battery charged and are the connections clean and tight

Lawn trc murray 17.5 hp 42in cut

my specialty, but, you didnt post what the problem is,so,here goes,if it wont start,it is probably a bad safety switch, take the small black wire off of the coil,if it starts, then its a safety switch,if it doesnt then it is the coil,if it only clicks with a charged battery,it is the solenoid, turn on your key and short between the two big bolts on it if it starts it is bad,if you need a belt,i will need the numbers under the seat, otherwise i will try to find them for you,i will post a user manual for you here, Murray 425607x52A 42 34 Lawn Tractor Parts

OF course if you keep turning the engine oner, the starter is going to get hot and start smoking. Its not the battery thats the problem,it sounds like you may have a carb problem or maybe just need a new spark plug

Engine starts then shuts off

Possible bad fuel solenoid is causing no fuel flow to the carburetor. Check fuel pump pressure if equiped. Check saftey interlock switch relays. Easiest way to test them is to replace them with 430-300 relays from stens. They arent expensive make tripple sure the fuel tank is venting and make sure the carburetor inlet needle and seat arent sticking from varnish and gum
